I spent my sunday to create some new genre Icons for my media center. I’m currently using the neo theme and the mercury cover flow view. The good thing with this view is that the name of the genre is written under the coverflow. This means you can use icons without any text so you can use them in every language and you can use every icon for every genre or you can just add any text you like.
Here is a preview:
And what it looks like in my setup:
The idea was to create a filmstrip (Filmstreifen in german) that would look like one strip in the cover view. It doesn’t work really like i thought first because there are spaces between the icons but I think it looks pretty cool anyway. I took a stock image of a 35mm filmstrip and kept only two frames. Then I searched for two images from movies that are typical to the corresponding genre. I tried to choose movies that show the range of their genre. Horror for example with Psycho as a classic masterpiece in suspense on the one hand and Nightmare on Elm Street as a modern slasher movie on the other. At last i added some grain to the pictures because I thought they looked to “clean” for a filmstrip.
Feel free to ask for genre icons you are missing or just download my photoshop template here and make your own. You just have to add and crop the two pictures and put them under the grain layer. Basic photoshop skills should be enough to make your own icons.
