Feature Neo recently added list should respect config setting "Dim unselected posters"

I like to turn off dimming of unselected posters.

When it comes to the recently added list in NEO, I find that the dimmed images are much too dark and difficult to see until you actually select them.

This is easily solved if it can be changed to honor the configuration setting.

I think this option may not be what you think it is. I originally thought it was what you do – the relative “dimming” of poster items that are not the currently selected item. However, this is not what it was designed to be. it is only used in the default theme (I think) and it governs whether or not the entire poster area is dimmed when the menu bar gets focus.

I don’t believe it is referenced anywhere else unless some other themes have implemented it differently.

  • I recall it dimming all posters individually except for the selected one, but it has been a long time since I tested that, and it was probably back before Neo when I was on the Pearl theme. I have not tested on the default theme although I will tonight. I do see what you’re saying though based on the comment in ConfigData.cs, but the config UI doesn’t make that intuitive. It’s called “Dim unselected posters” and the tooltip is “Dim unselected items”. However, looking at PosterViewItem.mcml, I think it’s a per-item setting, although I’m not able to verify this until later tonight. – luke about 1 year ago
  • I agree, it is a very poorly worded option. The reason the config description is mis-leading is that, when I implemented those descriptions, I made the same assumption you did about what this option was used for – only to later find out that it was not actually used in that way. It is possible other themes do use it this way but that is not how the default uses it and not how sam/jas initially intended for it to be used. – ebr about 1 year ago
  • Okay, it appears this is now an inconsistent option. If you look here you can see that I originally had the description to be what I described above and what the default theme uses this option for. However, you can also see in that post that Vanilla used this option in the way you assumed. So, the option was designed initially as I described but, apparently has been interpreted and used differently in other themes. Probably makes sense to standardize on the more intuitive application of this option. – ebr about 1 year ago
  • Well I was really curious so I just remote connected home to try it on the default theme. What I see is the selected poster not dimmed and all of the others dimmed. Now whether each one is dimmed individually or whether there is a single overlay is difficult to tell. But does that really matter? No matter which way it’s implemented, the end result to the user is essentially the same. – luke about 1 year ago
  • Well color me purple. Someone must have come back in and changed this along the way. It does appear that the default theme now uses this option in this way as well. So, as Rosanne Rosannadanna would say… – ebr about 1 year ago

Run this by me again. Is this the behavior you are suggesting?

1) Turn off dim poster settings = no dimming effects in RAL.

2) Turn on dim poster settings = dimming effects are applied in RAL.

  • Correct. – luke about 1 year ago

Ok Done. This will be in the next release of Neo.
