Question Genre Backdrops

Hi, i am trying to apply Genre backdrops (1 for each) but cant seem to get them to work..I am using the default them in MB, and have the folder structure in place…C:\programdata\mediabrowser\imagesbyname\genre,and in the genre folders i have the sub folders Action, Adventure e.t.c all with their png images named folder…Is it possible just to place a backdrop in there, and if so, should they be png or jpeg images??I have read several different ways on here, but that is using other themes, so can this work in the default theme? Thanks.

Good day,

Also when using Subdued theme (sorry I do not use it nowdays), make sure to unlock the setting:

Then enable backdrops if it not enabled:

  • Hi, well your advice worked first time so thankyou for that..Unfortunately, i did not like the theme set up, found it very stiff is the best way i can describe it in terms of viewing in coverflow compared to the default..I am pleased that you were able to at least sort it for me, and its helped me learn more about MB, and how to use it..Thanks again. – Trev22 12 months ago

Default theme does not allow for backdrops in all views. You will need to try another theme.

That said your setup looks good assuming you are using the default genres. I believe if you have non default ones to like “Super Heroes” for example these may need to go in the IBN/general.

What is the ImagesByName folder and how does it work?

  • Hi skynet, i am using the default genres..O.k, i cant do it using the default theme, do you have a suggestion/preference as to the one i should get/install to achieve the look i am after, and should the images be jpg or png? – Trev22 12 months ago
  • images can be png or jpg, doesn’t matter. generally you’d only need to use png if the image you have includes some transparency, backdrops generally do not, so jpg is the normal format for that type image. – DemonSeed 12 months ago
  • Agreed. The one place I do insist on using png is folder.png in my music folders because WMP insists on resizing folder.jpg to 200x200 pixels – waaay too small, and since png can take precedence over jpg in MB, problem solved. – daspannerman 12 months ago
  • Well my personal favourite are throgs suit of themes but they are not free. I think diamond is still free. – skynet600 12 months ago

  • Hi, and thanks for the replies for help..I have installed the Subdued theme, but i cannot get the genre backdrops to show be it png or jpg..My IBN folder has all the genres in there named folder, the same as the people folder has all the actors in there and these all show fine..The General/Year/Mediainfo & Studio folders are empty, so do i have to create a folder in the General???I have placed a war backdrop in C:\programdata\mediabrowser\imagesbyname\genre\war, but it only shows the war icon when viewing by genre…I only see my start up folder background unless i enter a movie folder, in which case i see the correct backdrops for the movie…I just know this should be a simple thing which makes it all the more frustrating…Thanks. – Trev22 12 months ago

The folder should be in IBN as example:

C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\ImagesByName\Genre\War C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\ImagesByName\Genre\War\folder.jpg C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\ImagesByName\Genre\War\backdrop.jpg

After that, run MB Service (in your system tray) with these options selected:

Wait till it done then open MB and test
