I just set up my XBox 360 as a Windows Media Center Extender via a wired connection. I have have an internal hard drive full of .mkvs included in my library, and it shows up flawlessly. I also have a bunch of TV shows on a hardwired computer running FreeNAS, but the files do not show up in MediaBrowser on the XBox 360. I have tried using Tobias Tobin’s tool (found here: http://tobias-tobin.blogspot.com/2008/08/giving-media-center-extender-access-to.html), however I get an error code every time. I have a user account set up in FreeNAS with full permissions. Whenever I use this username and password within the tool, it is able to connect and write a script, however whenever I try to execute, I get the error message: “Failure setting login script for… The user name could not be found. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2221”. Can someone help me to use this tool? Or is there another way around this. Any help would be appreciated.

On your host media center computer there are users setup for each extender named something like mcx_1. You need to give that user permissions on your NAS.

Where do you add the mcx_1? I dont have anywhere on WMC showing users/login.

I had this working the other day then I took my xbox off the network. re-added and I cannot connect to my Movies directory on my NAS (Buffalo LS Pro Duo). I re-started, re-created the Extender, and nothing. I can see the NAS folders but cannot access it. I get “You dont current have permission to access….”. I allowed even ‘guest’ access to the folder but nothing.

ebr is correct concerning the mcx_1 user needing permission to access your NAS. If you continue to have an issue try to allow “guest” (anyone) with no password access to your movie folder on your NAS. Then try to access. This will help confirm you do not have other connection problems.

In some cases it can take awhile before the network discovers new connections. You may want to consider taking the extender, media center PC, NAS and router down and then bringing them back up in reverse order.

Hope you do not have to go this far an ebr’s suggestion fixes it.
