When using an Xbox 360 as an extender you can play certain filetypes without any special tools:
For extenders used in combination with Windows Vista, these are:
- .dvr-ms
- .wmv
- .mpg
Extenders used in combination with Windows 7 can also playback these additional filetypes:
- .mkv
- .mp4
- .m2ts
- .mts
- .wtv
- .avi
- .divx
Troubleshooting transcoding errors
If you receive an error like “Transcode error. could not start transcoding process”, then Media Browser is trying to use Transcode360 to transcode the media on the fly for playback.
Transcode360 is a third party tool which is not always required and is not installed on your computer by default.
To resolve these kind of errors you should do the following:
- on your Windows Media Center computer, start the configurator from the start menu.
- Click “Advanced” at the top of the Configurator window and go to the “Extenders + iso” tab.
- Uncheck “Enable Transcode360”.
- Add all file extensions that the Xbox can natively play to the list of “extender formats” using the Add button. Please note that this depends on the Windows version you use on your Media Center computer.
