Installation of any plugin is accomplished with the Media Browser Configuration Wizard (configurator for short). This tool is installed by Media Browser and there should be a shortcut for it in your Start Menu.
You can find the shortcut here:
- Start > All Programs > Media Browser > Media Browser Configuration Wizard
Installing a plugin:
- Start the Configurator.
- Go to the “plugins” tab.
- Click the Add (Firestorm or earlier) or More Plug-ins… (Thunderblade or later) button.
- In the new window, select one of the plugins and click the Install button.
- While the plug-in is installing, a progress bar will appear at the bottom of the window and you will not be able to interact with it. Once it is finished, the progress bar will disappear and the window will become active again.
After installation of the plugin, it might be neccessary to configure the plugin.
- To check if configuration options are available, highlight the installed plugin on the “plugins” tab and click on the configure button on the plug-ins tab.
Notes:
- If the plugin has no configuration options, the configure button is unavailable / greyed out.
Updating an installed plugin
If you have a plugin installed and you want to update it to the latest available version, then you can click the button after you've highlighted the plugin.
Notes:
- Sometimes, the upgrade button is not available, allthough there is a newer version available. In that case, click on the Add (Firestorm or earlier) or More Plug-ins… (Thunderblade or later) button and install the latest version from there. The current version will be overwritten by the latest version.
Adding a plugin source:
Note: as of Media Browser 2.2.2 (codename Thunderblade), almost all plugins (native and third party) are included in the main repository / source.
[default repository]is shown to indicate that it’s available for install by default. You do not need to add a seperate source for this plugin. For the record, the default repository is:
In the Configurator, you first need to insert the plugin source if you haven‘t already, by following the steps below. If you already have already added the source for a particular plugin, you can skip this part.
- Click the “Plugins” tab and then click the Add (Firestorm or earlier) or More Plug–ins… (Thunderblade or later) button at the bottom.

- In the window that appears click “File” at the top, and then click “Sources”.

- In the next window, click Add at the bottom. (the screenshot below is just an example of sources)

- A new window with a text entry box will appear. This is where you either type or paste the source URL for the plugin you wish to add.

- After that click the ok button and press Done. The additional plugins from the new source are now available in the “Add Plugin” window.
Notes:
- You only need to enter a source one time if multiple plugins use that source
Removing a plugin including it’s settings:
- Start the Configurator.
- Go to the “plug-ins” tab.
- Highlight the plugin you want to remove. (For example “High Quality Thumbnails”
- Click the Remove button.
The plugin is now removed, however the settings file for that plugin still exists. If you also want to remove that one so you can start with a clean slate, then:
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\Plugins\Configurations - Look for the xml file that matches the plugin you have just removed. (For example
MtnFrameGrabProvider.xmlfor the “High Quality Thumbnails” plugin) - Delete this xml file
You have now removed the plugin and the settings file for it.
Please note that certain plugins also store information in the various cache folders. If you want to be absolutely certain that everything related to the plugin, then you should also clear your cache.
Known issues:
- [Firestorm] It is important that you exit out of the configurator after adding a new source. Otherwise the extra available plugins will not be listed.
- [Firestorm] If the list of plugins is blank or incomplete, exit the configurator and restart it. Then wait 30 seconds before going to the plug-ins tab.
- [Firestorm] An installed theme can only be activated from inside Media Browser. Installed themes are not available in the configurator on the “display” tab under Theme Settings > Visual Theme. You will need to go to the configuration menu in Media Browser and navigate to the “Themes” tab. You can select a third party theme under Media Browser Theme > Visual Theme.
