Media Browser Community Tracker

You can use an Xbox 360 to access Windows Media Center. The Xbox will function as an extender. Since Media Browser is an mcml addin application you can then also access Media Browser.

Below are some steps that you need to complete in order for this to function:

  • Add the xbox as an extender through Windows Media Center. Information about how to do this, can be found here.
  • Make sure you accept the permissions check that is shown when you launch the Media Browser Configuration Wizard. If the window does not popup, it means that the permissions are correct.

That’s it. You should be able to access Media Browser from the start menu strip that is created during the installation.

Media not stored on the computer locally

If you have Media Collections that include locations on a different computer than your own, you will need to make sure the extender has access permissions to that location.

Windows will create a seperate user account for an extender. (e.g. Mcx1-Computername)

That user account will need at least read and access permissions to any other shared location you have in your Media collections.

This applies to both windows and linux/unix locations such as:

  • Windows Home Server Computers
  • Other Windows XP/Vista/7/2003/2008 Computers
  • Other Linux/Unix Computers
  • NAS Storage Devices

The simple solution is to allow the “everyone” group read access to the share and folders on the other host.
