Sometimes, in certain conditions, Media Browser does not properly install. Installation issues can also occur if upgrading from a previous version.

First, please look at the system requirements to confirm that you install Media Browser on a supported system.

If that’s the case, then have a look at previously reported issues and their solutions.

Issue System.InvalidOperationException: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms:

  • Applies to: Configurator for 2.2.5 Cronos SP1 and later
  • Description: After installation you receive an error similar to the screenshot when trying to access the Media Browser Configurator from the start menu.
  • Screenshot: Click here

Cause:

Windows Vista or Windows 7 is configured to only use FIPS compliant algorithms. This setting is disabled on Windows systems by default, but there has been at least one report where this was enabled on Windows Vista.

Solution:

Disable FIPS compliance checking through the Local Security Policy or registry

Issue:

  • Applies to: 2.2.4 Cronos and later
  • Description: After upgrading from an earlier version, only some plugins are still listed in the Plugins tab. Also you cannot install any new plugins except a few (e.g. Chocolate, Favorites)

Cause:

Up until now 2 causes have been found for this issue.

  1. [french users mostly] You're using an outdated version of “Meta Video Editor” which prevents the MediaBrowser.dll from updating.
  2. You've tried to compile a version from the source code, but something went wrong back then, preventing the newer MediaBrowser.dll from being written to the correct location.

Solution:

Both causes above can be fixed by doing the following:

  • Uninstall any version you currently have installed.
  • Check if the “C:\Program Files\MediaBrowser\MediaBrowser” folder is empty or that it doesn’t exist anymore. If it’s not empty or still exists, delete the folder. (keep in mind: not ProgramData, but Program Files)
  • Check if there’s a “MediaBrowser” file in “C:\Windows\assembly”. If it exists, right-click it and choose “uninstall”. (Be very careful what you do in this folder!)
  • install the latest Media Browser version.

Issue:

  • Applies to: 2.2.2 Thunderblade [fresh installations]
  • Description: Configurator keeps asking for setting the permissions at each launch. Additionally Media Browser keeps showing the first-run dialog after a fresh installation

Solution:

This is a known bug in the configurator. The issue is fixed by an updated version.

  • Download the new Configurator from here (don’t use this configurator if you're on a newer MB version then 2.2.2)
  • Place it in C:\Program Files\MediaBrowser\MediaBrowser, overwriting the existing file.

Issue:

  • Applies to: 2.2.2 Thunderblade and later
  • Description: Configurator crashes when starting on Vista x86

Solution:

This is a two stage issue, on some systems the issue is fixed by an updated Configurator, and on some another fix has to be applied after the new Configurator.

  • Download the new Configurator from here (don’t use this configurator if you're on a newer MB version then 2.2.2)
  • Place it in C:\Program Files\MediaBrowser\MediaBrowser, overwriting the existing file.
  • Attempt to start the Configurator, if it loads then the issue is fixed, if not then continue on to the next step
  • You need to download an extra component from Microsoft, the Microsoft XNA Framework Redistributable 3.1
  • After you have installed this component, attempt to start the Configurator again, it should now load without issue.

Issue Media Browser Setup Wizard ended prematurely:

  • Applies to: 2.2.1 Firestorm and later
  • Description: Installation of Media Browser ends prematurely. The application is not installed properly
  • Screenshot: Click here

Solution:

Until now this installation problem has only occurred when the user has created custom start menu strips using Media Center Studio or when the maximum number of start menu strips / icons is reached.

  • In Media Center Studio choose “Restore Defaults” in the ribbon to go back to the default Start Menu Strip layout and icons.
  • Go to the start menu tab and open the Entry Points section at the bottom.
  • Select all Media Browser Entry Points one by one and press the Delete button on the ribbon.
  • Exit Media Center Studio.
  • Start the Media Browser installation again.

Issue ‘MediaBrowser.Library.Configuration.ApplicationPaths’ threw an exception…:

  • Applies to: 2.2.1 Firestorm
  • Description: After installation you receive an error similar to the screenshot when trying to access the Media Browser Configurator from the start menu.
  • Screenshot: Click here

Solution:

  • Completely uninstall Media Browser using the steps described here and reinstall using the setup program.

Issue System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly…:

  • Applies to: 2.2.1 Firestorm and later
  • Description: In case you receive an error like this, there is something wrong with the Windows Media Center installation itself.
  • Screenshot: Click here

Solution:

The simple fix is to re-install media center.

  • Go to the Windows Control Panel
  • Click on “Programs” and then click “Turn Windows features on or off” (Might be listed as Programs and features if not sorting by categories)
  • In the new window navigate to “Media Features” and untick Media Center. Press “Ok”. Media Center is now being removed.
  • Click “Turn Windows features on or off” again and navigate to “Media Features” again. Tick Media Center and press “Ok” again. Media Center is now being installed.
