Today I was forced to reinstall Windows 7 because I was still on the releace candidate which is about to expire.

I've succesfully made a manual backup and restore of the Media Browser configuration and additional info like the .vf files, display and playstate settings.

For a future version it would be nice if there was a simple backup/restore tool that would make a copy of all configuration related settings including playstate and view information. It could be a simple file and folder copy to a specific directory.

The backup could then be restored after a fresh windows and media browser installation.

This would make things a lot easier for the general public in case they:

  • want or need to reinstall Windows.
  • want to experiment but want to make a backup of a working configuration

Of course the assumption has to be that the actual media is still located in the same directory structure as before, I think we also will need to assume or inform the user that a backup can only be restored in the same Media Browser version.

Sounds like a good idea! The configurator is getting a bit complex now, perhaps this could sit in the help tab I proposed until the developers can take forward your redesign?

I'd like to see this too. I am constantly configuring, experimenting, F#!~#!# up, my setup and having to re-install.

You've got my wish for this, definately.

I have had to reinstall windows 7 a few times now due to varying changes, such as hardware, dying drives etc. This would certainly be a welcome addition to the pot. I've got pretty good at it now.

A nice feature would be to schedule the backup to weekly, daily, etc and on multiple drives if desired. This way it can happen in the background, but would certainly have to include all IBN folders. I feel the plugins would need to be reinstalled on a fresh install.

Great Idea tho and i'm all for it.

I think EBR is well on his way with a double secret “MBSettingSaver” plug-in to do that. It backs-up and restores all display settings and PLUG-IN’s (I believe) and if it doesn’t handle everything needed, I'm sure it may be expanded to do so. Maybe EBR can chime-in as to its status — last I saw it was ALPHA.

OK — Not the same as in the Configurator tool, but it’s something that is here now (or was). But maybe the logic can be used to add it to the Config tool.

Saving Exisiting Theme Settings

Note: It is not on the main plug-in repository.

  • Thanks for the corrections Birkoff. Seems my “due diligence” needs a little work. :D – ripper2860 almost 3 years ago
