Bug X BOTTOM RIGHT HAND CORNER

no supporters

I'm using the DIAMOND theme, and when I go back to the home screen from a library, I get a large X in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, and a frame around the whole screen.

Is this a bug, or is MB trying to tell me something, such as an upgrade for a plug-in is available ??

I can’t seem to capture a screenshot to show what I mean.

I am seeing this a lot in the new build, I think it’s covered under the missing posters/image bug that has been reported here: Covers not displaying and constantly flickering

It’s a bug with the refreshing of the image in cronos. Unfortunately the only option I can suggest at this time is going to the link gr021857 provided and voicing your concern. I can only assure you it’s not a Diamond bug (little consolation at the moment I'm afraid).

  • Thanks ST – I have only ever used DIAMOND so wasn’t sure if it was MB, or DIAMOND. Glad to hear it’s MB ;–) – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • Present in Default theme also. – brazen1 almost 3 years ago
  • Yep, and in Harmony. It appears to be the backdrop, as it you turn it on/off in Harmony, the X appears/disappears. Also, it seems to be related to making changes in the CONFIG. Whenevr I make a change and hit CONTINUE, the X appears. Anyone see this ?? – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • If I remove the backdrop.jpg from the start-up folder, I don’t get the issue when changing CONFIG options. It’s the same backdrop.jpg I've been using since before Pegasus. – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • I have just used a different picture as backdrop.jpg, I get the X appear after making CONFIG changes. – CBers almost 3 years ago

CBers, do you have your backdrops in the StartupFolder or an IBN\General folder or a combination of both?

  • I have the backdrop.jpg in the startup folder, but I do have a folder.jpg in the IBG/General for Trailers. – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • ok, but I assume you're having the problem on the entire EHS, or does the backdrop for Trailers still work after you've come back out of the config menu? – birkoff almost 3 years ago
  • It’s only on the EHS that I'm geting the problem. I can reporudce it on 3 seperate installs of MB across 2 PCs and a laptop. – CBers almost 3 years ago

This smells like the same problem as the flickering thing. We'll see if my fix for that fixes this and then I can either mark as dup or pursue.

  • I did put a comment on that thread, but I wasn’t getting exactly the same. I thought I'd fixed it by clearing the cache of all images, and the cache.db (I'm using SQLite) but it was today when I realsed that it was the CONFIG that was causing it, I believe. – CBers almost 3 years ago

@EBR – your latest fix (Covers not displaying and constantly flickering) seems to have solved this issue as well.

  • Good Thx. – ebr almost 3 years ago

  • Created:almost 3 years ago

@EBR – sorry, but I'm going to have to take that back – I still get the X in the bottom right hand corner. I obviously hadn’t done enough in MB to make it change when I thought it was fixed.

Can you reproduce this with the other themes (default)?

It is unable to load your backdrop for the main screen for some reason. Can we please see the log…?

  • Yes it is reproducable on default, diamond, vanilla … – soultaker almost 3 years ago
  • So you can reproduce this ST? – ebr almost 3 years ago
  • The only thing I did was wait for the media library to refresh itself a process that took 12-15 minutes for my collection. After that is was ok. BUT this problem does exist. – soultaker almost 3 years ago

  • Created:almost 3 years ago

@EBR – yes it occurs with Harmony and the default themes – see above. As SOULTAKER says, it does seem that if you make a CONFIG change whilst the library is being refreshed it causes the problem, but if the library has fully refreshed, then CONFIG changes work OK.

  • Can you post a log file from when the error occurs so I can see what is happening? – ebr almost 3 years ago

  • Created:almost 3 years ago

@EBR – log as requested.

All I did was open MB, turn on logging, exit MB. Re-start MB, go to CONFIG, turn off a couple of settings (allo internet providrs and weather) and saved and when I got back to the EHS, the X was there.

Based on the log, MB was in the middle of a library update at the time. If you wait for that to complete, does the image show?

Also, this is interesting, I wonder what is going on here…

@EBR – can’t help you there – don’t you know :–)

I am using the SQLite – would that make a difference ??

Also using shared playstate as well.

Soultaker said above that if you wait it doesn’t happen.

@EBR – any further thoughts on this please ??

Waiting for the library refresh to finish is a workaround, and the X doesn’t detract from anything really, it just needs fixing.

  • UPDATE: Just waited for the library to finish updating (no spinning DIAMOND heavy workload symbol), and made a config change, and the X appeared !! – CBers almost 3 years ago

Okay, I understand why you are losing your backdrop when you update the library and can reproduce that. However, I cannot reproduce losing it every time you change something in your config file. Are you hitting “Update Library” everytime you make a change there?

[edit] Here’s an explanation of what’s going on:

When the library does a full refresh it refreshes everything – including the images for the root folder. It does this because that is the only way we can pick up changes to those images (if you delete or add them).

So, when that process kicks off, the first thing it does is delete all the cached images for the root folder. This is why you get the “x”. That doesn’t happen in my theme (I just get the normal blue background) but the others appear to show this “x” whenever a backdrop doesn’t exist. Personally, I don’t like that because, maybe I just don’t want a backdrop but the “x” makes it look like something is broken.

Once the refresh is done and the images re-loaded, all should be fine again. Basically, this is normal operation, it just looks like something is wrong because of the “x” (IMO).

To help this situation out, I have made a change that will be in the service release coming up. I have changed it so that it does not clear out the images during a normal, daily refresh. It will only clear them out if you manually hit the “Update Library” button on the config page. This should minimize this occurrence.

As for why you lose your backdrop image when you make a change in config, unless you are manually updating the library each time, I don’t know why this is happening.

Thanks for the replt EBR.

No, I just hit CONTINUE if/when I make a config change – which I don’t do very often.

I didn’t change anything regarding folder/EHS images between the previous version and CRONOS.

With the DIAMOND theme, SOULTAKER added a HEAVY-WORKLOAD symbol that shows when the library is being refreshed, but this never starts comes when I hit CONTINUE.

What theme do you use ?? The X seems to appear in most themes, according to other people.

In the log you posted above, a library refresh is taking place (the last line of the log file says this) yet you said you didn’t force one. Do something for me.

  • Enter MB. Let it sit for about 60 seconds and notice if it does a refresh.
  • Turn on logging if it’s not already on.
  • Then exit MB and go back in. Again, notice if it does a refresh.
  • Go to the config page, change something and then go back to the EHS and notice if it does a refresh.
  • Post the results and your logfile out here.

Thanks.

@EBR

  1. entering MB, logging turned on, no refresh, exiting MB.
  2. entering MB, waiting 60 seoncds, no refresh currently (it should be fairly up-to-date).
  3. Log file is growing – seems to be internet providers working.
  4. Waited >60 seconds now.
  5. Entered config and turned the clock off and hiy CONTIUE.
  6. No X displayed.
  7. Exiting MB.

  • @EBR – did you notice the SQLite errors at the beginning of the log file ?? – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • @EBR – there’s a spelling mistake in the code somwhere, when loading plug-ins – “Tyring to load” instead of “Trying to load” – small point I know. – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • The sqlite errors are not a problem. The typo is in neph’s music plug-in. – ebr almost 3 years ago
  • Since the error didn’t occur, this doesn’t help much :). That is a lot of updates going on, though. Did you change/add a bunch of TV? – ebr almost 3 years ago
  • @EBR – nope, not that much today. I'm assuming that this is due to “ALLOW INTERNET PROVIDERS” being on ?? I use MediaCenterMAster to ontain metadata, so I don’t need it on – may have switched it on over the last few days when playing with the config. – CBers almost 3 years ago

CBers – unless you can confirm that you still lose your backdrop image whenever you modify the config – I'm going to mark this as invalid because I don’t really think there is a bug here.

P.S. Something is really goofy with this topic. The fonts are wrong and IE siezes up about every 15 seconds when this topic is open…

@EBR – I don’t lose the backdrop image, just get the X displayed.

It has to be a bug in CRONOS, as I haven’t changed any images/backdrops etc. since I started with MB, from v2.1.3 to 2.2.4.

It needs fixing, and other people have seen it as well, so it’s not just me, but if you can’t decipher it, then I'll have to live with it.

You can delete the log if you wish – it no longer servers a purpose. I don’t get any issues with it in FireFox.

Thanks.

  • Wait a minute…how do you get the “x” and still have the backdrop? I need a picture of this. – ebr almost 3 years ago
  • @EBR – can’t give you a screen capture as doesn’t work, just get a BLACK picture captured. Might have to use a camera if it’s really required. – CBers almost 3 years ago

I figure I better jump in here before this gets marked as invalid.

I too am experiencing the ‘X’ bottom right – however I DO lose the backdrop every time this happens.

Sometimes during the same session it comes back, and mine doesn’t occur as a result of a config change – just browsing my media causes this occassionally.

I haven’t tested it much so I'm not able to provide much info at this point but I just want to confirm that I also experience this issue.

  • @SEANBUFF – I also had it occur last night just by navigating the menus and NOT making a CONFIG change !! It must be to do with the loading of the background after others images are loaded elsewhere. Do you use SQLite ?? – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • That “x” think simply means an image failed to load. There are a number of reasons why this might happen – not all of them bugs, but it still could be. This is why I don’t like this “x” image. It used to be, if an image failed to load, it just didn’t show up. Now, with this X business, it looks like something is horribly wrong. – ebr almost 3 years ago

Do you guys have “show initial folder background” checked? If so, try un-checking it and see if that helps anything.

OK, here’s something new. Tried to do a screen capture (see above), so pressed Alt+PrtScreen, and with MB (W7MC) minimised, I started an app to paste it into, but when I went back to MB, the X was there in the corner.

I have turned “show initial folder background” off, but now I have lost my background – that is the file called backdrop.jpg in C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\StartupFolder.

I'm very confused now.

  • Do a manual refresh on each of the main items in your EHS list and then see if you get the backdrop on your EHS. – ebr almost 3 years ago
  • @EBR – “manual refresh on each of the main items in your EHS list” ?? – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • Scroll to each top-level item on the EHS and hit Ctrl-R. – ebr almost 3 years ago
  • @EBR – OK, will do – I didn’t know you could do that. – CBers almost 3 years ago

@EBR – OK, manually refreshed the libraries, and didn’t lose any backdrops, but the X appeared.

I changed my theme from DIAMOND to DEFAULT, and I cannot, at the moment, replicate the X.

brazen1 reported that it was present in the DEFAULT theme, but I can’t replicate it, yet.

UPDATE: Just managed to get it in DEFAULT theme, and that was just going into CONFIG, moving through the “tabs”, and hitting the CONTINUE without changing anything.

I have this issue too using Chocolate. I think it is the rotating backgrounds causing the issue. I only have 1 backdrop in my startup folder and I think that when you move to a page that has multiple backdrops and it moves to the next backdrop (backdrop(n).jpg) when you go back to the main screen it is still looking for a backdrop(n).jpg file instead of backdrop.jpg so you get a grey background with a X in the right corner…

  • Confirmed this by placeing 6 copies of my backdrop file in the startup folder and nameing them backdrop1.png – backdrop6.png. no longer getting a grey screen with the X – davydm almost 3 years ago
  • Double confirmed :) just went back and put 8 different backdrops in the statupfolder and the issue is gone :) you can see each time you go back to the EHS it is loading a different backdrop… – davydm almost 3 years ago
  • Very true. davydm could be onto something here with the recent change to rotating backdrops. This could explain why I will sometimes lose the backdrop (displaying the X), and also have it re-appear again in the same session — almost like it rotated back to a working backdrop. It’s very random for me though. Not using SQLlite, Theme = Chocolate – seanbuff almost 3 years ago
  • @DAVYDM – I think you're right, as I have copied my background several times, and I now CANNOT get it to show the X. Perhaps we should add this to the workaround tab for now ?? – CBers almost 3 years ago
  • This looks like a good catch, guys. Not sure exactly what is going wrong but at least we now know where to look and that there is an easy workaround. – ebr almost 3 years ago

I think we can close this off now, as I haven’t had any re-occurences since 2.2.5 was released.

  • ebr should probably mark this as fixed so he gets the badge. At least, I think he was the one that fixed it. – sinjen almost 3 years ago
