After months of development GameTime is moving out of Beta and into Release Candidate status. Thanks to Smidley, Demonseed, EBR, and others for every effort they've made to help make GameTime a better plugin.

What’s New in 2.5.0.7

  • Added ability to delete extension. (This actually sneaked out with the 2.5.0.3 compatibility release)

  • Fixed a bug where GameTime was pulling the rating from <CustomRating> in the local .xml. The tag has been corrected to <TGDBRating>

    What’s New in 2.5.0.5

  • Added support for Draco

  • Added {romNameExtensionless} as a switch for those weird emulators :)

  • A few minor fixes

What’s New in 2.5.0.1

  • GameTime Now supports a DetailsView for games. FINALLY!!!

  • Selecting games from the RAL no longer crashes Media Browser

  • Banners now work (oops)

  • “Genre”, “Number of Players”, “Developer” and more can now be downloaded from thegamesdb.net

  • Support to kill and restart various Controller Mods (MCE~Joy, Xpadder, and others)

  • Support for ISO mounting software for PC games (Daemon Tools, Alcohol, Virtual Clone Drive) Feedback Please!

  • Added support for ImagesByName Developer and Publisher logos

  • Plus various minor bug fixes

Prior Version Download

For users who are experiencing trouble with Draco, I'm providing a download of GameTime that will work with Media Browser 2.2.9.0. It contains all the features of 2.5.0.5 and doesn’t require Draco.

To install just unzip into your root folder and it will place the two files where needed.

  • How did you get the Console information to display like in 0:18-0:24? I know you can use console.xml, but I'm not sure how you edited the code to look like that – PMac over 2 years ago
  • EDIT: Basically, I'm looking for the SNES, N64, and Games for Windows descriptions you have in the video – PMac over 2 years ago
  • Great work on the video DS! I love it! One minor thing though… in the credits, it says “TheGameDB.net” and it should be “TheGamesDB.net” (forgot the “s”). – smidley over 2 years ago

can’t wait to try this out, thanks so much for your hard work and congrats on new implementations.

I just upgraded. Major props to Redshirt and everyone involved with the project. I am strangely fascinated with watching the cover art slowly load and the metadata update on my ROMs; I'm also wasting a disproportionate amount of time doing so, much like a little kid with a shiny toy.

  • I'd be lying if I said I didn’t do the same thing when I first got remote metadata working :) – Redshirt over 2 years ago

Great work just tried it out! With the template addition alone I think a lot of people will find this more user friendly and much faster to setup! Again great work on everything!

  • One question redshirt, For games like FF7 or chrono cross or anything with more then one disc how can i display meta data and keep it from listing disc 1 disc 2 ect..? – Funlittlejeff over 2 years ago
  • /Waves_Hand These are not the droids your looking for… – Redshirt over 2 years ago

Coming out of comments

With my setup, I have c:\Games\PS\Final Fantasy VII Inside that folder I have the discs named cd1 cd2… etc etc I see the play command when I enter the Final Fantasy VII folder and all the metadata. however the emu always launches cd1 to start. I have to use the emulator’s built in cd swap to move to another disc.

I'm happy with this setup except for games like Gran Turismo 2 which the two discs are two different games. I have not decided what I'm going to do there yet

cheers…

  • My set up lets me navigate like this Mediabrowser-games-system-game-Discs but when there are more then one disc i can’t view meta data is there anyway to change this or is it MB that does this? – Funlittlejeff over 2 years ago
  • This is the same problem people with boxsets go through. It’s a MB thing I'm sure. There was a thread regarding this problem with boxsets, I'm not sure if it ever got any traction. – Redshirt over 2 years ago

I'm not having much luck only due to user error. I only have games purchased through Steam. So what I have been doing is creating folders of the games such as Call Of Duty WAW into C:\games\PC\WAW. However when opening Mediabrowser there is no download of Metadata etc and the games aren’t seen. What am I doing wrong. There is no exe for my games?? One shortcut example is:– steam://rungameid/10090

Really happy to see banners getting pulled from thegamesdb! everything works and looks great!

  • It’s because of the amount of banners you were adding that made me have a look at what was going on… Keep it up :) – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • I am, slowly. It is a lot of work to get the artwork, crop and size it. Every banner you see took on average about 2 min for front back cover and banner. – Funlittlejeff over 2 years ago

Redshirt, I can’t seem to get the publisher and developer logos to show. Is this down to themers. I'm using subdued theme currently. Also do I need to have internet providers ticked to grab info from thegamedb or does it automatically connect within the plugin itself.

Cheers for any pointers

  • Hey, currently only Chocolate, Pearl, and Simplicity have GameTime support (and upcoming Hybrid). Subdued works well but doesn’t yet pull any advanced properties from GameTime objects. And yes, you should have to have internet providers enabled for metadata to be retrieved from thegamesdb – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • Cheers for the info. Is there an API for thegamesdb, i might create an app to pull this info into a game.xml for locally stored metadata. Or at least have a go at it, it will help me learn some more C# :) – Cheesegeezer over 2 years ago
  • There is an api. It’s described here: http://code.google.com/p/thegamesdb/wiki/ApiGetGame I've been working on a thegamesdb local metadata scraper already. I expect to have it near feature complete by the end of the weekend – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • Awesomeness Redshirt!!!! look forward to this :) – Cheesegeezer over 2 years ago

The guys over at thegamesdb.net have made improvements to their name searching. Previously, some games like “F-Zero X” were not retrieving metadata.

If you guys come across a game that isn’t pulling metadata, and you've verified there’s data on the site, post the game name in either this thread, or Smidley’s thread here. While your over there give him the “thumbs up” for his efforts

Great looking plugin!

I have on problem. When I install I do not see a shortcut in my mediabrowser home screen. I looked over your install notes and did not see anything on this. Am I missing something blatantly obvious? Usually is the case for me haha.

Thanks

  • lol no worries.. You most likely missed step III in the KB that said you had to create an entrypoint for your game folder the same way you had to for your movies. I've updated the kb article with a picture How do I install and configure the "GameTime" Plugin?Redshirt over 2 years ago

Love this plugin so far and can’t wait to see how it progresses.

Are you directly involved with thegamesdb.net site? One thing that I think it could really use is screenshots of the games rather than just box art or promo images.

I don’t know if you're familiar with emumovies.com, but they have compiled a tremendous amount of artwork and videos of games across all platforms. While media browser is sadly not capable of using the animated videos the way the arcade cab front-end hyperspin does, at the very least a screen shot next to the description would be awesome.

I appreciate the hard work and can’t wait for the metadata scraper!

  • Hey tangential. We are planning on including screenshots of games on the site in the future. We're just trying to get all the core features worked out first. Glad to have another user around! :) – smidley over 2 years ago
  • I would like to see screenshots added to GameTime, but it’s one more thing that Themes have to accommodate. As for the metadata scraper… It’s coming along nicely. It won’t look like much, but it will work nicely… – Redshirt over 2 years ago

Thanks for this great plugin. Is it possible to put all the games, for example .zip files (roms) in one folder or do every game need to be in it’s own folder. I read in a other thread that it was planned to add support for all the games in one folder, but it didn’t seem to work for me.

  • Hi. What your referring to is the ability to store all your games for a system in one folder rather than have a subdirectory for each game. I don’t intend to support that because it would make it impossible to have local metadata for each game – Redshirt over 2 years ago

My mame games now crash Media browser. for file extension I am usuing .zip and as soon as you move to the “Mame Arcade Games” icon on the EHS it crashes Media Browser.. Help..

  • Ill have a look when I get off work. A million hours from now :–( In the meantime can you post a log somewhere so I can see what’s going on – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • The plugin was never designed to have an EHS folder as a platform folder. The expected pattern is EHS->Mame->GameName I'm interested in actually seeing how it behaves if I set it up the way your suggesting. I'll have a look at it and determine what kind of work is required to get it to work without hard coding the root folder – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • All my other emulators are working of the EHS for instance I have 1.) Movies 2.) TV 3.) NES Games 4.) N64 Games 5.) Pinball Games etc etc – Viper over 2 years ago
  • Are you still using those dummy zip files so you can support images with your mame setup? – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • I'd try clearing the ‘items’ section of your cache. If it worked before, I would expect it to continue working – Redshirt over 2 years ago

I had this posted over at thegamesdb.net, but Scott suggested I post it over here.

Ever since the title of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV – Turtles In Time was changed in the database, the game info won’t load in Media Browser. I have the folder named Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV – Turtles In Time, but I also tried Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV Turtles In Time. Neither one worked.

Thanks! Nik

  • Worrd! Thanks Redshirt. Keep up the good work. I have been LIVING in GameTime, and on TheGamesDB.net for weeks now. haha.. – nikoli4 over 2 years ago
  • Turtles in time should be working fine now. The problem was that someone had saved the release date in shorthand and GT didn’t like it at all :) – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • thanks redshirt! How was the date entered? I've been entering a lot of info, so it might have been me that did it. Just want to make sure I don’t make the same mistake twice. – nikoli4 over 2 years ago
  • The date was entered as 08/06/98 instead of 08/06/1998 – Redshirt over 2 years ago

Hi, great plugin, it has rocked my world…and my girlfriend hates the media center more than ever lol!

I am currently using the diamond theme in cover flow view and it works great, but I would love to be able to select a game and have it take me to the details page like it does with the movies. Is this possible already and Im missing something obvious?

Many many thanks for this awsome plugin!

Doc

  • Hi… If your using version 2.5.0.x of the GameTime plugin, it will go to the details view. Unless you have ‘auto enter single items’ selected in the options. If your running the most recent versions of everything, then I'm not sure what’s going on. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • I have media browser 2.2.9, diamond theme 0.3.3.3 and gametime 2.5.0.0 and ‘auto enter single items’ is not selected in the menu?? cant get my head around it! – Doc – docmagic over 2 years ago
  • I've tried re-installing everything and still no joy….aarrrrggghhhh! If anyone does have any thoughts please let me know as Id love to get this working! still loving the plugin though! Great work! -Doc – docmagic over 2 years ago
  • Doc, do you have each game in its own subdirectory. That is the layout that by is designed to support? Some choose to have all games in the one folder, not the recommended way… – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • Yeah they are all in their own seperate folders G:/Games/Platform/Game title/rom file. -Doc – docmagic over 2 years ago

The Plugin seems to work great, thanks! My only question is (and the may have been answered already somewhere that I've missed…) Is there a way to get SNES9x to auotmatically launch in full screen mode? (ie. no need to hit “alt-enter” to switch it manually.) Or is there a different emulator that might work better? Thanks in advance.

  • Hey, if you go to the configurator and to the emulators tab, in the switches box u need the command -m -fullscreen “{rom}” this should work for you, its working good for me! -Doc – docmagic over 2 years ago

Great! Thanks, I'll give that a try

After toying around with your plugin some more, I've got another question for you haha. I realize this is a “work in progress”, and I'm not really sure how far along you are with getting rid of the bugs and what-not. But anyway, here’s my problem:

So far, it seems all of my ROM’s are working just fine, but any of the PC games I try to play (Haven’t tried all of them yet), seem to just crash as soon as I try to load them. I haven’t seen any posts on here yet related to this, maybe you're already aware of this, I don’t know.

I'm not sure how to save a log file, but if it would help, I could figure out how and then post it here for you.

  • I'd like to see a log file regarding this. Your the only one who’s complained about PC games crashing, so it’s either a hard to reproduce bug, or something with your setup. How do I enable logging? Where can I find logfiles? Explains how to enable media browser logging, and provides guidelines on log posting. I'd prefer if you linked to it as it will be too big to post here.. thanks – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • Here’s a link to my logfile: My Logfile I Only tried launching one game on this log to try to keep the clutter down, but the same has happened with every PC game I have (Although I still haven’t tried all of them, I've tried 6 or 7 with the same results) – PMac over 2 years ago
  • Just looked over your log file, thanks for posting it. Make sure your PC games are set to “Launch Directly” in the Game Systems tab of the GameTime configurator app. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • Thanks for the quick reply. Yes it is set to “Launch Directly” – PMac over 2 years ago
  • EDIT: I just tested some more games, and it appears that it is just certain ones that don’t seem to launch from MB. Others seem to work just fine. So it could just be an incompatability problem of sorts… I don’t think it’s a GameTime problem anymore, because some of the other games I've tested seem to launch smoothly. Thanks for your help though, I'll just keep tweaking things lol – PMac over 2 years ago

Hey guys, does anyone know how to get saturn iso’s to work with ssf? I can run it fine through the actual emulator but cant get it to work through gametime. Ive pointed media browser to my virtual drive (daemon tools lite), set my rom extention to .iso. any thoughts on this as I cant find any other posts dealing with this problem?

Many thanks

Doc

  • No worries now, Ive sorted it guys. FYI – I jus needed the swith -nogui “{rom}” It worked a treat! Panzer Dragoon Saga, here I come! Whoop! -Doc – docmagic over 2 years ago

Ok, Ive encountered another problem! Im using SSF to emulate sega saturn games, I can mount iso images and play them but I dont know how to mount bin images! Any thoughts on this? Doc

  • Are you using the GameTime ISO mounting support. Or are you manually mounting the images? – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • I'm using the gametime mounting, bit it doesn’t automatically do bin files. The iso files work great! Doc – docmagic over 2 years ago
  • SSF is a difficult emulator to work with due to it’s lack of command line support for image files… However GameTime should work with .iso, .bin and .ccd files. What iso mounting software are you using? Have you tried manually mounting the image and then running the emulator. That will determine whether it’s a GameTime bug or not. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • I'm using daemon tools, it works fine when I mount them manually, I jus can’t get gametime to mount a bin image! – docmagic over 2 years ago
  • I'll look at it over the weekend and see what GT is doing with .bin files. – Redshirt over 2 years ago

There are some changes happening right now with thegamesdb.net code, and it will probably cause GameTime to stop working correctly for a bit when you try to scrape data. We will keep you all updated on the issue. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm getting a problem with N64 games and Project64 (1.7), when I open any ROM from MC I get the error “Attempt to open file failed”. Opening directly from P64 works fine. Any ideas?

  • The command line support in PJ64 is kinda goofy. Make sure you have pj64 configured in the configurator to use {rom} and not “{rom}”. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • Set up as {rom} already. Just tried PJ64 1.6 and it works fine. Could it be how 1.7 is configured? – Syztemlord over 2 years ago
  • 1.6 is the last version I've tested with. I don’t have access to 1.7… They must have changed the command line argument. GameEx forum users are complaining about the same thing. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • So I'd stick with 1.6 until the finalize the command line changes. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • ok thanks, I can send you 1.7 if required? – Syztemlord over 2 years ago

WOW. GameEx, Maximus, Hyperspin- They all have something to learn from Gametime. This is by far the coolest plugin available for MediaBrowser. My library is way too big (several terabytes) for me to move everything into the required folder structure, however using junctions seems to work fine. My newb question: I'm using GameMeta .8. Can/is gametime appending/overwriting these xml files?

  • GameTime should not be using internet providers if there is a local xml file present. However, It is possible that I've overlooked something. If it is, it’s a bug. – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • And thanks for the glowing review :) – Redshirt over 2 years ago
