I would like to see the ImagesByNameProvider refactored to support subfolders. Example:
This would be a big help in the organization of customized icons within Media Browser. The problem with the current setup where all icons are bundled together, is that it becomes really difficult to replace/remove/edit icon packs if your imagesbyname folder has over 50 items
This would definitely be a huge improvement for the ImagesByName folder.
2 Thumbs and 2 Big Toes Up for this Feature!!! I would always wonder why there weren’t folders for categories so its easier to input images.
+1 for this.
( I find it’s funny that a dev writes a feature request to … himself :–)) )
The Dev is burnt out and needs a place to remind himself! ;–)
A small point…
Or better yet:
Have two separate ones.
ImagesByName/Actors
ImagesByName/Crew or Directors.
More like
ImagesByName/People
Yeah that makes more sense. Cast/Crew or /People would be better because we'd have to find all the various Directors and Actors and put them in separate folders.
This way all of them can go in one folder and you don’t have to make more work for yourself. I'm sure there will be a script that does this automatically when this feature is implemented.
Not only that, but to do a \Actors and a \Crew would be tough and potentially redundant, given the trend for Actor/Director types….Damn you Peter Berg! Clint Eastwood! John Favreau!
OK this needs bumped.
I seriously have taken alot of my time over the last several days after stumbling across this thread and threw my wish on it. Then I got to looking, the last post was a month ago I think. Well I decided to read through and take this idea and at least clean out my own Imagesbyname folder. This got me thinking, this seems to me like a lot of work unless we leave the people images at the root of the folder cause thats where metabrowser is going to put them, but from that point forward I think mediabrowser could then have organized folders for seperate categories.
In hopes of getting some interest back around this project I took the time over the last several days to go through my imagesbyname folder and organize it into a imagesbyname startup pack, featuring xzeners genre & media icons , me23’s year icons, and I'm sure images by other people in the community are in here also.
The actor and studio images I combined all the latest files I could find including Jon’s latest updates over at HTPC.NET I realize this a major project to keep these images updated and he was doing a noble job but last thing I read he was very busy, but before we worrying about updating what we already have, I figured first it would be better to organize it.

Now in a perfect world it would be nice if we could just drag this into the imagesbyname folder and be done with it, or at least all the folders except for people just drag everything inside that folder into imagesbyname. Still be alot easier to manage other icons if we had subfolders for other categories.
The folders that I have included are
Genre – 26 Genre Icons, based around the most common IMDB categories. Most of these icons I have used are by Xzener except maybe 3 that were done by someone else in his style.
Media – 14 Media Icons by Xzener in hopes of including options around using our own media icons in themes more user friendly.
People – 5,928 actor/director images here to start with. Not cleaned up, not fixed, but this directory has been combed over for all these other folders, and remember if you see what looks like duplicates be careful on removing cause these are pulled in at some point for some movies/tv show metadata spelling a actors name a little different. Second note I would have no complaints if anyone wanted to recheck my work. ;) What resolution should these be stored in for maximum performance and quality with mediabrowser?
Studio – 139 studio images that have been mixed in most of these releases for quite awhile. Once again what might look like duplicates is just because of all the different studios are pulled in through metabrowser into the metadata. Not sure what the preferred size is but some are way to small and unreadable some are way to big and pixelated and some are just right. Once again what is the preferred resolution size and I think full color looks best for these.
Year – Me23’s year icon pack, what can I say these work perfect.
I would to make an additional category request here. Ratings – Personally I would prefer it if we could have a folder containing all the MPAA movie ratings and TV ratings, then we could drag our own icons into this. Once again if this would happen we would need someone to give us a collection for the starter pack for this category. As of right now I dont see anyway to change these icons though but I much prefer big bold just the rating icons like in the default & diamond theme. I cant really read what the rating is in vanilla on smaller tv’s around the house so I would like to be able to change that easily.
Anyways this is a good starter pack for all those new users out there and maybe a starting point for one of you programming geniuses to figure out a way to keep things organized inside a folder structure like this.
Then people could build icon packs to drop inside of these folders to create an entire new look for anyone of these subfolders pretty easily
Any interest in this? If so I could post a zip of this folder on my dropbox for the community. I would hope that xzener and me23 wouldnt mind if I included their icons or anyone else in the community for that matter.
Here’s the zip file as 12/11/09 on my dropbox
Doesn’t it seem like it would be a whole lot easier to manage this if, instead of individual folders named for the item we're looking for with a “folder.jpg” in each one of them, we just had the folder “Genre” (or whatever) and then Action.jpg, Drama.jpg etc.?
It seems to me from the standpoint of creating these things that would be a LOT easier.
Yes that would make it even better. Especially for dragging and dropping of replacement image packs for categories.
Okay, but in looking at this, I now see that it is possible to have both a folder and a backdrop.jpg so maybe filename doesn’t work so well.
Also, what is “year” used for?
Give me your zip file cuz I think I've already got this mostly working…
Just got done uploading to dropbox
The year is a set of icons that show oscar trophies with the years underneath them when you select the year sorting option.
Ya technically you keep these in the folder structure so if you want to you could add the backdrops for genres also or the years which there is collections of both. Didnt think including backdrops would be good for file size, but as for out of the box use I think this would make life alot easier for new users and current ones.
Anyone that has porn with metadata collected from media center master will know how browsing just their movies by genre etc will throw up some interesting images. Not sure what could be done, maybe a ignore filter or something.
I can’t get to your dropbox file…
There also needs to be a “General” directory to house things like plug-in folder/backdrop images (e.g. iTunes Trailers).
Oh, man, now we need parental controls ratings on imagesByName too… :–|
folder security wont work for one specific genre folder to be hidden and not looked at?
No, totally different kind of folder. BUT, this shouldn’t be an issue if you have all your stuff marked properly. The only way you get a folder for a genre/actor is if something in the library refers to it. So, if you have PC on and blocked items hidden then you shouldn’t get any of those neat genres showing up… unless they overlap somehow with “normal” content.
Ok, I also implemented a Rating & Media folder in the zip, not sure why you couldnt get it to download or why I missed that comment. Let me know if you still have problems. I also created a thread on the forums here
http://www.mediabrowser.tv/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4501
I was thinking customizable ratings from themes, and also media icons could be pointed to in the future for the bluray topic maybe?
If you have DVD or Bluray marked in the metadata couldnt we point mediabrowser to the media folder and the proper named folder.?
