This post is just to see if many people like myself and other people i know using media browser want more from the music support side of media browser. Ie problems that i and others with the latest up dates of mb, and music support compatibility. i have read that music support may have many bugs with the newer releases of Mb as there has been no development recently on music support.

so all this post is to say what would you like to see in music support and would more development on the music pluggin make you want to give another donation for the fantastic work that the MB team are giving us. so please add a comment if everyone is as i am anxious for more development and let them know what you would like.

1/sort by artist. lists of artist that contain albums (similar to sort by actor) 2/bug fixes.

If your reading this please add a comment.

Cheers

could people showing there support please add to the “disscussion” box rather than “add comment”

Yep, I'd donate if it was updated

Like the idea and I donate to when it has updated :) Sort on genre, artist are my wishes for this and maybe an option to add a good/proper way to add online radio stations :)

ebr has mentioned if I would have a look.

I'm currently not using the Music part myself, haven’t even got Video sorted yet.

So first I'll try and fix any bugs.

I'm not up to date with what bugs there are with the Music plugin, could anyone enlighten me.

  • I think you might want to approach this as if you were writing the plug-in from scratch and use the existing one as a loose guide and to rob some code from. That plug-in was one of the first ones ever written for MB and, I think, does some things in a rather un-orthodox (compared to the current product) way. But, have a look and see what you think. – ebr over 2 years ago
  • Good idea, might be good grounding for the uTube plugin. – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • I agree with EBR here. I dont use the music plugin that is currently available just because there is no developer attached anymore. Would much rather see a new fresh take on bringing music to mediabrowser. – BAS over 2 years ago
  • Might be good grounding for a photos plugin too :) – daspannerman over 2 years ago

@Bas: Would much rather see a new fresh take on bringing music to mediabrowser

In that case any ideas of what features would be nice.

I've not looked at the plugin yet, but my gut feeling is that Music could be organised in the same way as Movies is.

You could then store all your albums in one directory, Artist/Genre etc.etc, would be shortcuts to the MP3’s.

What makes this approach nice is that the structure becomes very flexible, eg.

\NAS\music\All Music Albums \Album1 \Albun2 etc.

The above would be the only stored place, the rest below would be shortcuts.

\NAS\music\Artists \Bon Jov \Elvis
\NAS\music\Genre \Rock \Pop
\NAS\music\Year \80’s \90’s
\NAS\music\Publisher \Sony \EMI

Playlists could also just be another Folder

\NAS\music\Playlists\Wifes \Slow \Rock
\NAS\music\Playlists\Children \Bedtime \Party

etc. And of course custom Folder.Jpg’s could then be applied to each section.

Now one issue here is that if you have a massive collection of MP3’s, a lot of this information is probably already there, so a utility to extract meta info and create the shortcuts would be a must.

I would donate again for an improved music-plugin with more support for tags, indexing, mediainfo etc as my music collection is as important to me as my other media collections.

Display basic mediainfo for Music

There are a few requests for more support etc for the music-plugin so it would be good for people to throw their support into 1 thread.

  • The current MediaInfo plugin should be able to give us the Meta information were after. Just checked with the MediaInfo App on a WMA and all info bitrate/Album etc appeared. – KpjComp over 2 years ago

All i can say is fantastic thanks ebr and kpj,, and all other posters for this support. sounds really cool “ a fresh take on music eh” hopefully more supporters will make a wish so to speak.. ill be watching closely hope ebr and co can keep us posted on this thread. like you say karlos get everyones support into 1 thread just need to spread the word to get the support.

SO USE THOSE WISHES FELLOW MEDIA ENTHUSIASTS…

Long live the media browser comunity.

@KpjComp

It would be good to have the music-plugin as a more integrated plug-in, by this I mean that it behaves differently for each theme. Some themes can randomnly play tracks from the top level where as others can’t. Some themes in the past have struggled to populate albumart after an update, although now I think all are good. The now playing screen uses Mediacentre’s album wall whilst playing although I don’t mind that.

I do not have a problem sorting my collection by Artist but there are quite a few requests regarding this topic, sort by Genre, Year would be cool.

Personally I would like to see more info for tracks displayed whilst playing i.e Play Time, Bitrate, Year and Genre. Not sure how difficult it would be to implement and users would have to Tag their colections accordingly to what they would like to see displayed.

edit Possibly integrate a streaming radio plugin too ;)

  • I think the Radio plugin would want to be a separate plugin otherwise the plugin would be constantly fighting the difference. – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • I thought I would mention it while the going is good. – karlos65 over 2 years ago
  • I have streaming radio working in the actual music plugin. I treat it just like any other playlist. Basically, I have a folder with subfolders with different radio streams, ech subfolde has a folder.jpgwith logo of the radio station. works well. – ehgeahrev over 2 years ago
  • Interesting how does sort by Albumn / Artist work? – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • it doesn’t, only sort by name, but if all albums are tagged Artist – Album it works ok. Sort by name and date work ok, but no indexing works at all in any theme even though Maelstrom recognizes Genre and Year. – karlos65 over 2 years ago

One feature I would like to see is an online metadata provider. The current music plugin feels incomplete without it

  • I think that could certainly be achievable, but first I'd make sure local meta works. A quick look for music meta information I found http://musicbrainz.org and it’s API looks nice and simple. – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • Awesome! – Redshirt over 2 years ago
  • yes awsome, sort by artist is a must. meta data even better. maybe meta browser could adapt to the music side of things. just a shot in the dark… dont know if this is even possible. i wish i had the knowledge you guys have.. – crossleymarko over 2 years ago

i dont really know who all the developers are, but im hoping they pop on and give there support here. i have read that people don’t use the music support plug-in. well maybe it can be change so all media is solely used by MB

cheers all for posting

I've added my support here.

I'd donate if I could have all my music in a single folder – and then in MB I could “Index by Artist” and it would then show all the music split into artist folders – much like “Index By Actor” works now.

  • It’s another level more complicated for music though – Index by actors gives movies, Index by artist would give albums, which then contain mp3’s – daspannerman over 2 years ago

Ok, been looking at the Music plugin tonight.

It looks like it inherits most of it’s attributes from the Movie DB side. So I'm not sure this will take much work to bring it into line with the Movie side.

The folder short-cuts work the same as the Movies so the idea of just sorting the media into shortcut / directory / files works.

So, would I be right in thinking the main thing missing is extra meta-data information?.

Now if you have a large collection of music, doing the Directory short-cuts is going to be a long / boring task (not so bad with movies), so on top of getting local meta data extracted, would an automatic Short-cut directory generator be the best route. Also doing this it won’t matter what layout you currently have your music setup as MB wouldn’t even need to see the original, everything could be run from short-cuts.

I've also noticed in my small collection of Music, that I'm using Cover.jpg, the utility could also just do a copy to folder.jpg to keep things consistent in MB.

So my idea is –> You tell the Music plugin were to store Genre / Artist / Album etc. and an App is then run that scans all your music and automatically generates the required short-cuts.

One thing I did notice with the Music plugin, the Album artwork is fine, but no artwork is displayed for Songs, I assume what we want here is for the Album artwork too appear.

  • Please include browse by folder as an option…. – user29 over 2 years ago
  • You would just create a short-cut to the root of your music. – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • I'm a bit unclear about your focus on shortcuts here. I wouldn’t really want a plugin to create massive directories of shortcuts all over the place. What’s wrong with pointing directly to your Music folder just as you would with the Movies folder? – Riccardo over 2 years ago
  • Because the short-cuts give you more flexibility on what layout you want. You might pre-fare to have a layout totally different to what I might like, And like as in the Movies you can have custom Icons for each section. Is there any particular reason creating directories with shot-cuts is a problem? – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • eg. The top level of you Music might be Wifes Music / Bobs Music , a tool that scans your music and auto populates certain directories with Meta Data will give you infinite flexibility. – KpjComp over 2 years ago

Good day,

Well done and many thanks indeed KpjComp for taking this plug ins.

One thing tho, why not get the plug ins getting the info from the id3 tags? for sorting\indexing and a like.

Regarding donation for this or older one, I for sure will donate.

My best

  • That’s the first thing on my list, get MediaInfo working, this will grab TAG information from WMA/MP3/OGG etc. – KpjComp over 2 years ago

Ok, a bit more detail on short-cuts, as I'm not sure everyone understands them.

Firstly, short-cuts are not a new idea, it’s already built in at the core of MB, the Movies and Music already support this. If your not using short-cuts then your missing out on one of MB’s best features.

To explain better I'll create a pretend scenario. Say, me and my wife both like different music, in some cases we like the same music.

So if I had my music stored like –>

\\NAS\Music\WifesMusic
\\NAS\Music\MyMusic
\\NAS\Music\MusicWeBothLike

In MB I could create a Directory structure like-> (these could even be placed on local drive in case your NAS is read-only)

c:\music\WifesMusic
   \Albums
   \Artists
   \Genres
   \Playlists
c:\music\MyMusic
   \Albums
   \Artists
   \Genres
   \Playlists

And then I could create an automatic scanner that looked in \NAS\Music\WifesMusic and \NAS\Music\MusicWeBothLike extract the Album information and place into the Wife’s Album directory. And then also create another rule that did MyMusic etc. You could then have separate rules for Genre’s / Artist’s etc, so in theory you could have your Artists stored at a deeper level to say Albums, (your choice).

Your layout might be totally different to this, but the nice thing it doesn’t matter. :), if set up correctly using Filters/Sorting would hardly ever be needed.

  • yes would this be automatic… i dabbled in making folders for artist and putting shortcuts to albums in corrisponding artist folder.. but it got tedious as you had to make a new artist folder for a new album artist. or create a new shortcut for the new album.. very time consuming.. safe to say it didnt last… a script that made these shortcuts and corrosponding artist folder.. would be a start(if thats what you mean) i have noticed on most of my downloaded mp3 albums album artist is blank. and the artist is under contributing artist.. why is this – crossleymarko over 2 years ago
  • Yes. That’s the idea. – KpjComp over 2 years ago

  • Created:over 2 years ago

A bit more thinking on this, I would think a Tool to organize folder/file shortcuts would also be useful for Movies, the only difference would be that one would be looking at MP3/WMA meta data, the other would be looking at MyMovies.xml.

Since we're tossing out ideas here…

Currently, I use iTunes because the smart playlists (w/ live updating) and genius mix are hard to beat. I have no idea what an MB plugin might be capable of, but if anybody can figure out a way to allow for smart playlists and some sort of genius mix, I would absolutely pay for that (and possibly name a child after you).

  • I use smart playlist too, but generated through windows media player which automatically updates in music plugin in MB. – illusion888 over 2 years ago
  • I'll have to check that out… is it as powerful at iTunes smart playlist (not sure if you're familiar with it). Can you filter by lyrics? That’s iTunes main limitation. I'm trying to make a clean playlist. I would miss the genius feature though… – woody777 over 2 years ago
  • I'll say it’s as powerful as itunes playlist except no genius of course. – illusion888 over 2 years ago

I'd definitely donate for music functionality. I have a couple of requests/suggestions some of which have already been mentioned.

  1. Where a movie library with a couple of thousand titles is considered “large”, a music libray with several thousand tracks is pretty small. Which has me wondering if a file based/shortcut based solution makes good design sense. I'd strongly suggest a database approach that stores artist, album, and track info allowing for fast query result on just about any imaginable search criteria.

  2. Additional views; Album, Genre, Decade, Rating (number of *’s), etc, easily made possible with #1 above.

  3. Smart Playlists again, easy with #1 above.

  4. Suppport for lossless Monkey’s Audio (.ape) format. TagLib# can read APE tags and adding .ape support to the existing music plugin required adding one line of code to the MusicHelper.IsMusic method.

  5. Playlist sorting/randomization

That’s just off the top of my head. I'm sure there’s much more :)

Steve

  • I think the primary source should still be File/Folder based shortcuts, but have a Database to compliment it shouldn’t be a problem. – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • What SteveV said. I'm on board with all this. Super -dooper “way down the road” functionality requested could include similar functionality for sorting by “actor” in Movies portion. I suppose this would also require a meta-scraper along the lines of mediainfo or such, because as much as I have “Miles Davis” and “John Coltrane” ID'd in a rip that is “The Complete Miles Davis and John Coltrane … ” I certainly don’t have embedded metadata that includes all of the other set musicians. In the context of Jazz, many of the “front men” for various bands were also side men in other guys' bands before and during their own frontman era. I would be SUPER COOL to be listening to some tracks by the Miles Davis Quintet and see who the players are (a la movie actors) and then have that hyper linked to show me where else in my collection that person appears. I could follow that link on “Bill Evans” and it would show me not just all of my Bill Evans Trio CDs where he fronted, but his side man gigs with Miles as well has his gigs with Stan Getz, etc. I realize that this is REALLY pretty specific to Jazz, but that’s a ton of my collection. FLAC, Vorbis, APE, WV format “tag” support would be excellent as well. I'm sure there are more “wishes” that I'v got — many functions in the “Songbird” app and its many plugins (Last.fm, etc.) would be great, but that app never seemed all that stable and we'd really be talking “plugins w/i plugins” there … P.S. WOULD DEFINITELY be willing to donate even if my wishes weren’t met. – MRL over 2 years ago
  • Oh, and reading and recognizing cue sheets if that is even possible using WMP. I may be outing my NooB self. – MRL over 2 years ago

Hi KpjComp

Not sure if it helps any, but Throgmorton managed to display more mediainfo than most in Centrality. Although info is over 2 tiers, he has total album time, genre, total track numbers and year displayed.

i have found a program that embeds and finds album art and sorts tags.. its called album art fixer. when i say find it was on a storage drive. could this be looked at or implemented (like coverart). i used it with xp and vista.. was good. as most albums downloaded were never tagd

would we benefit

There is an open source library API for tagging music called id3lib could this be used for the musicplugin.

  • The MediaInfo.dll were using now can read MP3 tag information, plus tag information from most popular audio formats. I don’t believe it writes tag information, so the id3lib might be useful if Tag editing was included. – KpjComp over 2 years ago
  • I tag my own music but others have requested automated tagging, this would be useful as there are a few posts regarding lack of info displaying in the musicplugin. – karlos65 over 2 years ago
  • The MusicPlugin uses the TagLib-Sharp open source library which is capable of writing tags. – SteveV over 2 years ago
  • I might be wrong because I now don’t allow MB to use internet providers, but I can’t remember the musicplugin ever tagging my music. – karlos65 over 2 years ago

I also would like to see that the playlist will be auto saved when shutting down and that the playstate will be rembered so when playing the next time it plays further where it ended earlier.
