A minimalist theme emphasizing a balance between style and functionality. Inspired and influenced by XBMC, Subdued focuses on maximizing screen usage and usability by eliminating the display of “non-essential” information. If you’re interested more in finding what you want to play, and playing it, than in seeing all of the information MediaBrowser keeps track of, give Subdued a try. And, if you like it and use it, please consider donating to the project. Thanks to all who have contributed.

hi, just try v 2.0 i cannot get the White Shadow theme if i change in configuration i get the same original theme …..

and where i can make the font size bigger ?

thank you for your work.

  • I found I had to exit mediabrowser and reopen to get the new style. – DigiTM over 2 years ago
  • thanks i will try it … – sysmb over 2 years ago
  • Yes, you have to restart in order for any config changes to take effect. I still haven’t found a way to get these to apply on the fly. Haven’t given up, though. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • I edited the original post with some info on where the styles are located. They're in C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\Plugins\Configurations\SubduedStyles. You'll need to copy the style you want to start with, give it a new name, then open it in any text editor. The file is pretty well commented as to what each setting changes, but feel free to ask any questions. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

Looks nice.

think i found a newly introduced bug though. About 2 seconds after launching MB focus switches from the first item in my list (I am using EHS) to the parental unlock icon. About 15 seconds after that, focus changes back to the first item in my list

  • I just rolled back to 1.6. does not happen there. definitely a new issue with 2.0 – pheare over 2 years ago
  • I'll have to check into the parental lock focus issue. I don’t use it, so it wasn’t in my tests. The other issue I've seen, and it has to do with the new validation routines in Draco and the way I handle the Recent Items changing. I should be able to come up with a solution for that one. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • I also experience this, but not every time I start MB – JLPFLD over 2 years ago

I may be going slightly mad (well more than normal). I like looking at all the themes on my test box so play around with a lot of them.

On the latest version of Subdued I have changed the following (via the in app configurator, in MediaBrowser that is):

<ChildDetailsTop>40</ChildDetailsTop>

To values from 40 to 75, it never changes the height when in the details page of a movie. But it does change the look of the TV’s series if in detail mode (but not each individual episode). Is this by design? Or do I have another configuration that may be causing a conflict?

Thanks,

Brett

  • What exactly are you changing the value of? I don’t quite follow which setting you are referring to. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Editing original post… – bwhinnen over 2 years ago
  • This is by design. I understand the confusion with the term ‘details’, though. It refers to the Details view style, but not the item details view where you actually play the item. Currently, that view does not have any settings allowing it to be customized—mainly because of the relatively fixed size of the list of actions on the left. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Thank you for the response. I figured it must have been something like that ;) – bwhinnen over 2 years ago

Hi,

When upgraded to the latest version my translation file was overwritten, because of the version change, What is the current version number of subdued?

Thanks, Tempo

How do we fine tune things like the colors of the EHS or the font in Subdued?

  • You will need to modify an existing style, or create a new one (presumably starting with a copy of an existing one). Styles are located in C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\Plugins\Configurations\SubduedStyles. The included styles are pretty well commented as to what each setting changes. It’s my hope to have a KB article about creating a Subdued style at some point. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

Could you plz link to the backgrounds you use or are they included now ?

Really like the movie theater one :)

It’s not a large collection, but I placed all of the EHS backdrops that I make use of here. They're all pulled from other public collections or image searches, so feel free to use them for whatever you want.

Release 2.2 is out and includes some fixes and two new styles: Spy vs. Spy 1 and 2. If you can’t choose sides, then pit White again Black in these two variations on The Original and White Shadow. Also check out the root coverflow display option ‘Show As Text’ (highlighted in the bottom two screenshots in the original post). For an even cleaner horizontal menu, turn off the ‘Show Selected Item Info’ display option. Enjoy.

Is it possible to have comments on the different settings in “Subdued General and "Subdued Views” ?

Moreover, <ConfigMessageGeneral> and <ConfigMessageViews> does not appear.

I've been looking at if there should be a connection between Subdued-strings-en and strings-en

You know, amazing theme ;–)

  • Another good catch on the translation strings. There are supposed to be messages at the bottom of each of the config pages, but neither appear because I'm using the wrong string identifier. As for the comments on the different settings, I'll look into it. There isn’t much room for the “popup” help; and I'd hate to just have little more than a more verbose repeat of the setting label itself. If I can actually make it helpful, then I'll consider it. Otherwise the KB article How do I configure and use the Subdued Theme? will have to do. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • I have not seen that you have posted a KB article. Great :-D Thanks! But I still hope you eventually find room for it in mb, not so much for my sake, more for those who do not come in the mb community, you know :–) – JLPFLD over 2 years ago
  • daspannerman gets credit for the KB article. I've actually had nothing to do with it. Not much of a documentation person, myself. I'd rather be writing code. ;) Looking at the MB strings and the code, I would think I would simply be able to add entries with ‘Desc’ on the end and the popup help would magically work. But that doesn’t seem to be the case. I wonder if it is actually working in any other theme. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Made it silly mistake. The help does work properly…look for it in the next release. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • I am neither good at that comment, my English is lagging and code I can not figure out, but then I may make suggestions and find error, then you also have something to do :-D hehe – JLPFLD over 2 years ago

And I simply continue. Sorry :–) Can we maybe get an setting here, seemed to remember the possibility was there once?

The need arises when there must be translated.

  • Good point…now that those string can (and probably will) be longer in length, I need a way to set that size as well. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Great :–) – JLPFLD over 2 years ago
  • After giving this some consideration, I think instead of making this user adjustable, I will just make the panel a bit larger and allow the action buttons to word-wrap if necessary. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

I really like the direction you are going with this. At first I reacted poorly to the XBMC style with the EHS, but it has grown on me and I really like the look and option within the folders. Now the new styles make it even better. Awesome theme, great job. (shiver goes up my spine just thinking about that show. ugh…)

Hi! I just want to say that I really like your theme rwhapham and how it has evolved! I have one problem with it, that it doesn’t show the backdrop on the startup screen (EHS) but it shows the backdrop when I enter the config menu. I have the backdrop.jpg in ProgramData\MediaBrowser\StartupFolder and other themes like the default or chocolate show it. Thanks and keep up the great work!

  • I'll check into that. I use the ImagesByName folder to assign a different backdrop to each of my main items, so I haven’t had to use the StartupFolder backdrop before. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Now it seems to work… I haven’t done anything since the last time time I started mb, not even a windows restart. Sorry if I put you on an wild goose chase but I thought that I have tried everything before posting here! – jhonro over 2 years ago

hi rwhapham ! one thing that bug me ,is the cast layout.. i think the actor picture are to small to see from 3M and up …. i means now have 2 roll of 3.5 actor , how abut to mack it 2 roll of 2 actor . and to mack the picture biger ….

i hope you consider that idea… will mack the skin more perfect…. :)

thank you for the great work you doing..

How do you get to this?

Added ‘Show As Text’ view option for root coverflow view style

I'm trying to figure out the secret key combination and not having any luck…

  • You do this by disabling EHS – JLPFLD over 2 years ago
  • Yes, first disable EHS. Then you can change the View Style to Coverflow. Then you can set the View Option to ‘Show As Text’. Optionally, you can turn off the View Option to ‘Show Selected Item Info’ and the top/bottom panels will go away. This is how I have my setup. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

Great work rwhapham. Suggestion/request please. I've been able to disable the top panel (leaving the bottom) in coverflow as I really don’t care for it. However, doing so also takes away the title. Is there a way to do these while leaving the movie title in place? If not, would you consider writing in the code if it’s not too much a headache. See pic below please.

alt text alt text

  • hi,this look rally good ,nice work… after ,rwhapham answer sbut the title… please shre… :) – sysmb over 2 years ago
  • So true, I would so prefer to have the title bar just above the media details bar (ie: just below the coverart). Instead of above the coverart. – DigiTM over 2 years ago
  • @DigiTM. Or perhaps on the same line as the media details (making it autoscroll if too long) as putting it above the media details adds another panel to it. In my opinion, just the 2 panels as I have in the screen shot makes it more elegant. – illusion888 over 2 years ago

How do you get the EHS to appear at the bottom of the screen?

  • Created:over 2 years ago

In the “Subdued” section of the Configuration within Media Browser. Set the EHS position to bottom.

  • Created:over 2 years ago

can’t find that…..i can change the movies that show up as viewed, etc, but I don’t see anythiong that lets me change the ehs titles.

  • in the general settings, disable EHS, which allows you to configure the views (coverflow, thumbstrip) – yardameus over 2 years ago

In “Child View” or movie details, how do I get on the left, the trailer option and details option? All I have is Play, Overview, Cast, and Refresh… I used to have at least details.

  • The ‘Details’ panel is tied to the Subdued General option ‘Show Media Info/Details’. The ‘Trailer’ option only shows up if MB has found a local trailer for the movie. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • What if I wanted all of the details on but only in the details button… I turned it off because all of the avi, mkv, mp3, DTS, bla bla was taking up too much room in the TV episode details view. It would make the episode description run only one line for me. So in short I want the option for details when I click on details but not in overview mode. Update? – thejulianath20 over 2 years ago
  • The ‘Details’ panel on the item details view is back in release 2.3—no longer tied to the visibility of the MediaInfo icons/info. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

  • Created:over 2 years ago
  • Modified:over 2 years ago

Subdued 2.3 is now available. Both Coverflow and Poster views have a new option to set the style of the info bars for the selected item. You can set it to Split (default), Top, Bottom, of Off. A small side-effect of the change to this setting over the previous ‘Show Selected Item Info’ setting is that your Poster views will be shown with Split info until you change it (if you decide to). Some screen shots can be seen here.

Also added is a view option to turn on a full-screen backdrop overlay (the color and opacity of which is determined by the active Style). This is especially helpful in making your posters more visible if you have chosen to turn off the thumb background (on any view style but Details) and are using fan art backdrops. Enjoy, and keep the suggestions coming.

Hmm … Now I knock myself :–) I'm actually really sad that “Play” menu is so wide. Thought it ruin the overall impression … But again, I have only myself to blame for :–) Banking my head on the table :-D hehe

  • Perhaps it was just good enough to turn word wrap on. Can you tell me the longest item in the Play menu from your translation? – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • 11 letters (Cast = Skuespiller) I just checked on some other language, I think Actor/Cast it is one of the longest word of all translated into Danish. :) – JLPFLD over 2 years ago
  • Damn .. word wrap in one letter … It was otherwise near :–) But I would rather have “play” menu so and then not to translate Cast / Actor … Think most Danes can figure it out, after all :-D – JLPFLD over 2 years ago
  • I noticed that after I released the update and THEN put your translated string in. Expect it to be widened a bit (but not as wide as it was in the original 2.3) the next time I have an update. At that point, you can put the proper translated string in. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Great … thanks for all your work :) – JLPFLD over 2 years ago

First I'd like to thank you again for all the great work you are doing. Just updated and I cannot get to the menu to change the views & sorting. I get the options: configure (takes me to the main MB configuration screen), Lock Configuration, & Close. Also do not see the new options for the info bars, I assumed they would be under Subdued General, but I also looked in Subdued Views.

  • I'm guessing you're using the EHS. That’s a “specialized” root view in most themes—you can’t change view styles. I also prevent you from changing the sorting and grouping on non-EHS root views as well. If you navigate into one of your collections, you should see Sort By and Group By options on its menu. And, if your View Style is either Coverflow or Poster, you should find ‘Selected Info Style’ under the View Options menu. That is the setting that changes the info bars. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Just checked again to make sure. I get the same menu on EHS, and in my collections. Also just noticed while in the movies details or episode level the configuration button takes me directly to MB configuration. – gbrown over 2 years ago
  • Dang, I see the problem. Forgot a condition to check when hiding/showing the menu items. I should have a fix out soon, but in the meantime, you can disable EHS, set your views up how you want, then re-enable EHS. And there is nothing to set on the movie/episode details view, so the config button is supposed to take you directly to the MB configuration. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • “And there is nothing to set on the movie/episode details view, so the config button is supposed to take you directly to the MB configuration” Ahh guess I have never tried it on the level before. Thanks again – gbrown over 2 years ago
  • Lol :–) I also had to look long for places to change “Group by” or something else … hehe – JLPFLD over 2 years ago

in coverflow I have a black transparent oblong around my covers, any idea why?

  • Probably because you have ‘Dim Unselected Posters’ enabled on the MB General config page. If you would like to use that setting, and are using CoverArt, you'll want to change the ‘CoverArt Adjustment’ setting under Subdued General. It adds margins to the focus frame and dim overlay for when your posters don’t go edge-to-edge. I use an adjustment of 5 for CoverArt’s Diamond treatment. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • spot on thx rwh – karlos65 over 2 years ago
  • I changed mine to 5 and it’s still there. Though I'm using 3D coverart, does this mean I need to make the number larger? – DigiTM over 2 years ago
  • The CoverArt adjustment doesn’t make the dim overlay go away, it just keeps it from hanging over the edge of your posters. It’s not so noticeable if you have the thumbnail background on; but if you turn it off and just have your posters against the backdrop, it can be visually distracting. If you're using the 3D treatments from CA, I would suggest just turning off ‘Dim Unselected Posters’, since there is no way for me to create an overlay that matches the exact shape. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

  • Created:over 2 years ago

Thanks rwhapham for this great work. Really enjoying the new backdrop overlay, the intensity no longer distracts one’s focus from the posters.

  • I must be blind, I can’t find this option – DigiTM over 2 years ago
  • @ EHS options/view options/show backdrop overlay – karlos65 over 2 years ago
  • If you read the changelogs, any time I refer to a ‘view option’, it is a setting that is accessible via the ‘View Options’ sub-menu in the config popup. They are settings specific to the current folder (or type of folder, depending on how your MB is set up) and are not global. So, for instance, I don’t turn on the backdrop overlay on my root view because there is no reason to; but I do on the poster view for my movies because I have the thumb background turned off and it makes it easy to see the posters against the fan art. – rwhapham over 2 years ago

Looking great. Love the ability to change the Info Sytle and I never noticed the Show Thumbs Background before :)

Two things:

  1. When going back to the EHS it always defaults back to whatever the top item is, regardless of where you just were.
  2. Is it possible to get a tad more padding between the Title and the media info in the Bottom Info Style in Coverflow? Any letter that hangs down touches the media info icons (just using the stock ones). Perhaps just move the wording up a few pixels as there is enough room on top.

Really liking this theme!

Thanks!

Brett

  • Actually Number 1 seems to only happen if you exit from the media library soon after entering it. I'll have to do more research on that one. – bwhinnen over 2 years ago
  • There is definitely some strange behavior with the EHS and getting it to properly “remember” what was selected—especially if you use the Recent list to go into an item and then return back to the EHS. It seems that trying to maintain the state of two different lists (the main item list, and the recent list) really confuses Media Center. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • And, yes, I can tweak the spacing on the top/bottom item info styles so that descending letters don’t overlap the MediaInfo icons. – rwhapham over 2 years ago
  • Thank you :) Excellent work! – bwhinnen over 2 years ago
