As media browser continues to grow in scope and available features, we on the MB development team are always looking for ways to make the experience more rich and enjoyable for the user and encourage development and future growth. The introduction of “supporter-only” plug-ins was a big step in this direction as it has enabled development to continue and thrive.
However, as we have grown and more and more of these premium-type options become available, it has become clear that we are outgrowing our current donation model of support. Basing feature access on a level of donation has worked fine in the early going, but, as we move forward with more available features, that type of model will be biased against the new user (as they may have to donate more than than they want initially to get the newer features).
So, along with Titan (the next version of MB) we will be introducing the new Media Browser Store. This new approach will allow users to select the specific features they wish to have their contributions un-lock. It will also make it easy for 3rd-parties to provide their premium themes and plug-ins to the community in the same simple interface – allowing end users to just have a single supporter key that unlocks all the features they have selected.
More information will be coming soon but to answer a couple of what will probably be your immediate questions:
I’ve made this a discussion topic on purpose. Feedback is welcome and encouraged. Thanks for helping to make Media Browser what it is today.
Sounds brilliant! I can’t wait. Well done on another great move all!
Maybe just maybe, by popular demand a new updated musicplugin might be available in the store?
Great stuff ebr, it’s fantastic to see the MB Store concept become a reality at last!
I am for it and hope you will have specials for bundle packages….would be nice if this was built right inside MB though.
This is a BRILLIANT idea. What about Fanart?? Would you guys be willing to set that up in the store too??
It’s great to see MB getting to this maturity stage. A simpel one stop shop to get everything around the core. Kudos for this and it will bring the developpers their well deserved rewards.
Awesome idea! Because I have to say, I dont use the Pearl theme, and probably won’t (no offense to the developer who created it!)… It looks great, but I prefer the look of others…
A couple of questions – for those who have donated already, how will the money they donated be translated to this? Also, will the amount they've already donated be taken into consideration? Thirdly, is it expected that single plugins will be a flat fee and if you buy 3 in one go, you'll get a slight discount or something like that?
Just curious… :) Great idea though, and really hope it generates some revenue for all your guys hard work…
Would love to see some more complex plugins coming from this that will really personalise the experience :)
T-Shirts, caps and mugs to follow ;–)
I should mention the store does not have shopping cart functionality at this point. Each item is a separate transaction but we will have the “bundles” to make getting multiples easier.
There should be an option to donate on every transaction too.
Will there be an option to swap features based on amount spent already? At least for those from the MB team? So that I could for instance drop pearl for a different theme in the future if I want should an option I want come out.
I do think this makes sense rather than continue to try to keep increasing the supporter amounts to keep up with features and make cost prohibitive for someone new.
Great idea!!!!
I assume individual trials will be available for those that wish to “try before you buy”?
This is an excellent idea, but I think it should be somewhat be tied into the configurator for the end user, don’t know if that is already planned or not.
For example, plugins/themes that have already been bought should have some type of indication or separation from plugins/themes that are still available for trial/purchase. This would only affect the ones that are available in your store obviously, and not plugins/themes that are available for free.
Other than that, looking forward to it :D
FYI – the store is now live.
It’s important to remember that the store is for obtaining keys or authorizations for certain plug-ins. All plug-ins are still installed and maintained via the configurator just as they always have been.
Also, some items in the store may not yet be available via the configurator as they require the next version of MB which should be out soon.
Thank you everyone for your support.
Cool, thanks EBR.
So is the store only web-based at the moment, not integrated into the configurator ??
Will that come with Titan ?? If not, how do I get the new configurator.exe ??
PS. When is Titan being released ?? Seems to have slipped a couple of times, so was just being nosey really.
Which items in the store require the next version of MB? I don’t want to buy something until I know it’s working. That way I won’t think it’s on my end. And BTW, good job on the store, I like the idea if it brings in new functionality such as the MB Intros.
