Discuss Introducing The Media Browser Store...

As media browser continues to grow in scope and available features, we on the MB development team are always looking for ways to make the experience more rich and enjoyable for the user and encourage development and future growth. The introduction of “supporter-only” plug-ins was a big step in this direction as it has enabled development to continue and thrive.

However, as we have grown and more and more of these premium-type options become available, it has become clear that we are outgrowing our current donation model of support. Basing feature access on a level of donation has worked fine in the early going, but, as we move forward with more available features, that type of model will be biased against the new user (as they may have to donate more than than they want initially to get the newer features).

So, along with Titan (the next version of MB) we will be introducing the new Media Browser Store. This new approach will allow users to select the specific features they wish to have their contributions un-lock. It will also make it easy for 3rd-parties to provide their premium themes and plug-ins to the community in the same simple interface – allowing end users to just have a single supporter key that unlocks all the features they have selected.

More information will be coming soon but to answer a couple of what will probably be your immediate questions:

  • Will media browser still accept donations? Yes. We will still accept donations of any amount you wish to contribute. All donations are greatly appreciated and encourage the continued development of the product.
  • Will media browser core still be free? Yes We are committed to keeping the core media browser product a free and open offering.
  • Will there still be a way to get multiple features for less? Yes. In addition to the individual plug-in features, we will also provide bundles of plug-ins at a discount. 3rd parties can also provide these bundles of their plug-ins.
  • What if I’m already a MB supporter? Nothing will change. If you have already contributed at a level that gives you access to certain plug-ins, you will continue to have that access. Additionally, depending on the total amount you have contributed in the past, you may also gain access to some of the newer plug-in features (from the MB team only).
  • I’m a plug-in/theme developer. How do I get my plug-in into the store and how do I use the MB supporter key validation? More information will be coming on this soon. If you have specific questions right now, drop a line to sales@mediabrowser.tv and we will do our best to answer them.

I’ve made this a discussion topic on purpose. Feedback is welcome and encouraged. Thanks for helping to make Media Browser what it is today.

Maybe just maybe, by popular demand a new updated musicplugin might be available in the store?

I am for it and hope you will have specials for bundle packages….would be nice if this was built right inside MB though.

  • Since it requires interaction with PayPal it would be difficult to integrate in the MB interface. – ebr about 2 years ago

This is a BRILLIANT idea. What about Fanart?? Would you guys be willing to set that up in the store too??

  • This is the first release of the store so we are running with apps only at this stage. – soultaker about 2 years ago

It’s great to see MB getting to this maturity stage. A simpel one stop shop to get everything around the core. Kudos for this and it will bring the developpers their well deserved rewards.

Awesome idea! Because I have to say, I dont use the Pearl theme, and probably won’t (no offense to the developer who created it!)… It looks great, but I prefer the look of others…

A couple of questions – for those who have donated already, how will the money they donated be translated to this? Also, will the amount they've already donated be taken into consideration? Thirdly, is it expected that single plugins will be a flat fee and if you buy 3 in one go, you'll get a slight discount or something like that?

Just curious… :) Great idea though, and really hope it generates some revenue for all your guys hard work…

Would love to see some more complex plugins coming from this that will really personalise the experience :)

  • See initial post on handling current donations. Discounts will be provided through set “bundles” of plug-ins. – ebr about 2 years ago
  • Urgh – I did read it earlier – but somehow missed the actual content of the big section on “What if Im already a MB supporter”… – adgrimes about 2 years ago

I should mention the store does not have shopping cart functionality at this point. Each item is a separate transaction but we will have the “bundles” to make getting multiples easier.

  • Created:about 2 years ago

There should be an option to donate on every transaction too.

  • Good idea! – Riccardo about 2 years ago
  • If the donation model of support doesn’t bring in enough revenue now then I cannot see people paying and donating at the same time! – karlos65 about 2 years ago
  • The idea is basically the same as paying your bill at a restaurant. Optional tip if you like. – skynet600 about 2 years ago

Will there be an option to swap features based on amount spent already? At least for those from the MB team? So that I could for instance drop pearl for a different theme in the future if I want should an option I want come out.

I do think this makes sense rather than continue to try to keep increasing the supporter amounts to keep up with features and make cost prohibitive for someone new.

  • There are no plans for “trade-ins” at this time. – ebr about 2 years ago

Great idea!!!!

I assume individual trials will be available for those that wish to “try before you buy”?

  • The way the plug-ins and trial periods work is all still the same. The store just “sells” the registrations for those plug-ins (the same way donations do now). You still install via configurator. You just register them through the store. – ebr about 2 years ago

This is an excellent idea, but I think it should be somewhat be tied into the configurator for the end user, don’t know if that is already planned or not.

For example, plugins/themes that have already been bought should have some type of indication or separation from plugins/themes that are still available for trial/purchase. This would only affect the ones that are available in your store obviously, and not plugins/themes that are available for free.

Other than that, looking forward to it :D

  • Right now there is no way for a plug-in to indicate its status as a “registration-required” entity so we have no way to do this. Possibly in the future, but it will take changes to the plug-in structure and cooperation from all devs. – ebr about 2 years ago

FYI – the store is now live.

It’s important to remember that the store is for obtaining keys or authorizations for certain plug-ins. All plug-ins are still installed and maintained via the configurator just as they always have been.

Also, some items in the store may not yet be available via the configurator as they require the next version of MB which should be out soon.

Thank you everyone for your support.

Cool, thanks EBR.

So is the store only web-based at the moment, not integrated into the configurator ??

Will that come with Titan ?? If not, how do I get the new configurator.exe ??

PS. When is Titan being released ?? Seems to have slipped a couple of times, so was just being nosey really.

  • It’s only slipped once so far! That’s not bad really. :) As ebr said, it’s not tied to the configurator, but provides you with keys to enter. – Riccardo about 2 years ago
  • I have moved the date for Titan twice. I'm going to float a public beta in the next day or so. If that goes well, it should be on time this time. As stated previously, the store is on the web and will probably stay that way for the foreseeable future. – ebr about 2 years ago
  • Eh, once, twice… what’s a little delay between friends. :) – Riccardo about 2 years ago

Which items in the store require the next version of MB? I don’t want to buy something until I know it’s working. That way I won’t think it’s on my end. And BTW, good job on the store, I like the idea if it brings in new functionality such as the MB Intros.

  • I think just Intros and Lotus are Titan dependant. – ebr about 2 years ago
  • I just bought MB Intros. I have MB V 2.3.0.0 Can I use MB Intros, or do I have to wait for the next version? – Danno100 about 2 years ago
  • It will only work with Titan. It is not available in the configurator yet. Just a few more days… – ebr about 2 years ago
  • No disrespect but it might be better to only put add-ins in the store that can be used with the current version. I don’t even know how to get MB Intros since it is not available yet as a plugin. Could we also remind folks that Titan is version x.x.x. I can’t remember what V2.3.0 is called since on the configurator it only has a number. Just a thought. – Danno100 about 2 years ago
  • I understand. We have debated over the store availability and chose to go ahead and put them out there since they are in beta (only intros and Lotus are issues right now) and Titan (2.3.1) will be out very soon. Since all these items have free trial periods, we didn’t expect anyone to purchase through the store until they had actually tried them out. If this causes too much confusion, we may change our minds and keep early release items out. Thanks for the feedback. – ebr about 2 years ago
