Wrench gamebrowser, the evolution of GameTime.

alt text

Version 1.0.0.5

Requires MediaBrowser 2.3.2.0

Where to begin… I’ve been wanting to set up a website focusing on GameTime configuration for some time. When I started looking into it, I found I couldn’t find a GameTime domain I liked. Even worse I found that GameTime was a registered trademark referring to another product.

Now I could keep the GameTime name, since this plugin isn’t offering the same services as the company with the registered trademark, but there’s still the website issue. So… I’ve opted to change the name of the plugin to gamebrowser. I feel this better defines it as a mediabrowser plugin.

Since I’ve started asking for donations, I’ve received donations from a few good souls. I’ve taken that money and added to it out of my own pocket in order to create gamebrowser.tv and it’s forum.

I’ve created this site as a thank you to the GameTime supporters in the hopes that it will make setup easier for new users. You will be able to find detailed configuration examples for all the most common emulators. I’ll add to the list of emulators as time permits. There is also a forum so members will be able to discuss anything from gamebrowser setup, to emulation in general, or share art or whatever.

This site is a joint effort between Demonseed and myself. It is the results of countless hours of work on both our parts. There is still more to do, I will update the missing emulators over time. Demonseed has exceeded all expectations, including his own with the contributed art. A big THANK YOU, although you know I appreciate it.

I’m hopeful that this will bring new users to gamebrowser and mediabrowser.

Installation:

Gamebrowser is on the default repository, so getting it is easy. For help configuring it, you can come to gamebrowser.tv and you will find lot’s of info and support.

Congratulations on making this bold step forward! Sometime soon I need to pick up a controller for my HTPC and get some gamebrowser on the go. :)

The site is looking nice so far, although I did spot one little typo: “Works with best in class library manager: mediabroswer

Congrats Redshirt!

Heads up to all the longtime gametime users. If you still have the external plugin source in your configutor for gametime you need to remove it. That link is no longer valid.

To remove it open the mb Configutor>Plugins>More Plugins>File>highlight the old url>Remove. Done

Very nice!

So, will we be seeing a new thread called “Red Shirt’s GameBrowser Metadata Manager” some time soon?

  • It just doesn’t roll of the tongue, need to name it something… and soon. – Redshirt about 2 years ago

Im thinking about setting this up finally, and was wondering if anyone could give me an idiots guide/list as to the best emulators to use and where to find the games etc?

  • due to copyright bla, bla, bla, you'll have to take it into your own hands on finding games and downloading them.(Hint = torrents) But you can find all the emulators here and then you can visit the gamebrowser site to find out the best ways to set everything up. – DemonSeed about 2 years ago

Right no problem im sure i can sort that, but i seem to be having some problems with the emulators, are there any which are simple to use , at present i seem to be needing virtual drivers and a host of other things

  • all the older ones are relatively easy to set up. zsnes for super nintendo and virtua nes for nintendo are straightforward. Both have setup directions on the link that Demonseed provided. Kega Fusion for genesis and sega master system is another one that’s easy to set up. – Redshirt about 2 years ago
  • thanks im really looking for a dreamcast emulator having a craving to play capcom vs marvel – jp1911 about 2 years ago
  • my pleasure. Once your comfortable with those emulators than you may be ready to set up NullDC, a dreamcast emulator. – Redshirt about 2 years ago

I only just noticed the brand renaming via another topic. Good stuff! Good work on the new website. It looks very nice!

Just a quick question; are you planning to use the gamebrowser forum for tracker bugs and feature request or will you continue to use the CT for that? (just so we know if topics come up)

  • I would prefer people use the CT for feature requests and bugs, due to the built-in tools for the devs to track them. However I'm trying to encourage the users who don’t feel comfortable posting on the CT, due to it’s MB focus, to post on the GB forum instead. – Redshirt about 2 years ago

I have been away for a few weeks and have once again began to “play” with media browser/gametime.

What a massive step this has now taken. Gamebrowser looks and feels awesome.

Many thanks for all your efforts with this and your continuous support for users like me who run into problems.

Nice one Red, all that hard work has paid off! The site looks top-class and no doubt GT/GB is fast becoming a big selling-point for those people who are thinking of moving to MB :)

  • Thanks… If only it was that popular. With time though I think it will be a major draw. – Redshirt about 2 years ago

I'm having trouble launching PS1 .bin files with gamebrowser. I get the error message the file cannot be played. Everything is set up to play with epsxe 1.6(as 1.7 doesn’t do full screen).

  • You mean ePSXe? What are your switches. I'm using 1.7 and it works with -nogui -loadbin “{rom}” – Redshirt about 2 years ago
  • Im not able to verify right now, but im fairly sure 1.7 does full screen with the opengl driver. – Redshirt about 2 years ago
  • yeah typo acknowledged. 1.7 doesn’t maximize to full screen it cuts off the bottom and right hand side and minimizes down. I'm using -nogui -loadbin 2{rom}“ as well. – vileboy about 2 years ago
  • actually it may just be parasite eve that doesn’t work with 1.7 – vileboy about 2 years ago
  • Off the top of my head I seem to remember the command line changing between versions… Or im mixing up my emulator… – Redshirt about 2 years ago

  • are you using disc image files successfully for other emulators? Do you have iso mounting enabled, it shouldn’t be necessary for PS1 – Redshirt about 2 years ago
  • no iso mounting. All my snes, nes, gameboy advance and colour, Gamecube and N64 games work fine. – vileboy about 2 years ago
  • I can see the issue, I just don’t have an explanation for why. The last line of the log GamePlaybackController: CanPlay() is supposed to be displaying the full path of the game file. Can I see your C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\plugins\configurations\GameBrowserPlugin.xml file – Redshirt about 2 years ago

  • Looks like you have playstation and dolphin using the .iso extension. That is not going to work. – Skeletonkey about 2 years ago
  • try this link: Keyboardless Seamless GameBrowserSkeletonkey about 2 years ago
  • dolphin works – vileboy about 2 years ago
  • to be fair the .iso was for super smash bros brawl which I've since removed from the system everything else is a .gmc so no probs with Dolphin. GB won’t launch .bin files either even though epsxe will work fine on its own. Great article btw thumbs up. – vileboy about 2 years ago
  • Vileboy, looking at your config, your actually using the PCSX2 switches on your epsxe, change them to -nogui -loadbin “{rom}” – Redshirt about 2 years ago

I recently upgraded to latest GameBrowser + MB SP1 and now 5 of my 7 PC games do not launch ( all of which worked perfectly up to the upgrade ). I tried recreating the directories and new shortcuts with same results. I cannot figure out why 2 games work and 5 do not, they are set up exactly the same.

I get the famous Video File cannot be played… Any suggestions ? Thx in advance.. Tester

Great Plugin!

Any chance we can see support for other themes? I'm currently using Destiny from Throgsoft. I'd love to see metadata on the folder view e.g. Genre, Number of players etc.

  • I thought this was down to theme Devs rather than Redshirt? – vileboy about 2 years ago
  • Vileboy is rght. Throg has pledged support in the future but right now only Pearl, Chocolate, Simplicity have full support. – Redshirt about 2 years ago
  • Ah right, well I'm glad to see it’s possible for the future! Nice stuff. – swhitmore about 2 years ago

Just had an idea for this plugin. I love the ability for using this plugin and launching wii games. But of course like many others, I hate having to exit medibrowser, pair the remote, then go back in and play.

So instead of waiting for a solution, maybe we can do the following (and I say we because I do not program haha)

  1. Have a gui plugin within windows media center that will allow you to pair your wii remote. Maybe this exists?

  2. Use MB Intros for launching this plugin before launching doplhin emulator.

What do you think? Sort of had an epiphany today and thought it was a great idea…maybe a dumb one…lol

  • Wii controller support is something that’s always driven me nuts. If a way existed to pair the remotes other than the windows bluetooth stack I would throw everything into supporting it. I wish the dolphin team would write a gui extension for pairing that popped up when you launch the emulator. – Redshirt about 2 years ago
  • Very true, I should ask over there as well. I think in general a blutooth plugin would be good for MCE though, maybe I'll ask around at the greenbutton. It’s unfortunate that it is extremely complicated to pair with a key a wiimote. – FantaXP7 about 2 years ago

OK… I'm looking for a few brave souls to test this build. Copy the download to your C:\Windows\ehome directory.

I'm looking specifically for people that are having problems launching games that are ISO’s. If you get the popup saying “ISO mounting is not correctly configured”, this build is for you.

Install requirements.

REMOVE your Game folder(s) from the first page of the mediabrowser config The plugin will now automatically create a root folder called “GameBrowser”. Once I've verified this resolves the ISO issue, I'll add the ability for users to rename the folder.

You will need to run a manual service refresh before launching media browser. When you run the refresh, make sure to place a check in “Clear Items Cache”.

  • I'm there dude. – vileboy about 2 years ago

i know this is probably a dumb question, but where does the backdrop pull in from for the games main folder (in the EHS)? i cant seem to figure out how to replace my existing one. i tried the root folder where i have my games stored and the folder i have the config pointing to for my folder image but neither has worked. someone please help me out here.

  • Are you using the official 1.0.0.1 version or the 1.0.0.2 version I posted in a link above. If your using 1.0.0.1 then you should be able to set it from within the media browser configurator, same way as the other vf’s. If your using the 1.0.0.2 build then put it in your ImagesByName\General\Gamebrowser directory – Redshirt almost 2 years ago
  • ahh the ibn directory – that was the one. thanks red! – tp546 almost 2 years ago

Good day Redshirt,

I found out, if I am using SQLite and GameBrowser, IBN/People images will not show in Media Browser.

As CoverArt 3 will give error.

Removing the GameBrowser, then all back to normal again:

My best

  • Just had a look at my own setup. I'm using sqlite on my dev box. I do get artist images with sqlite and coverart and gamebrowser. Does your log give errors when you have all three enabled. – Redshirt almost 2 years ago
  • Ahh, I re-add GameBrowser and all working fine, I even update to the ver 1.0.0.2 and still no issue, it then sure CoverArt matters, sorry for all this buddy :( – abobader almost 2 years ago

Can anyone remind me where to find my steam content so I can add the shortcuts, please I've forgotten.

  • For Steam shortcuts… Just right click on the game in your Steam App and select “Create desktop shortcut”. Then move the shortcut into your gamebrowser folder as per normal folder layout. – Redshirt almost 2 years ago

having major issue with game browser setup to folders in c:\games one is c:\games\Pc games (nothing currently in there) and c:\games\snes (each game file is in it own sub-directory there) now when i goto video games in mediabrowser I see the 2 folders but when click on snes it comes up as if it is a movie and has play. next etc…

how do i fix this? what am i doing wrong? driving my crazy

  • Its sounds like you either have a file directly in your snes folder that is not a jpg, png, or xml. Or you have a folder that has an extention in the name (ex. folder.rom). – Redshirt almost 2 years ago

Hey mate, I love GB. Just a quick question. Did you guys ever get the universal quit key working? I can’t seem to get it to work.

  • Unfortunately no. This is actually really complicated. In a few weeks I’ve got 10 days off work, I’m hoping to catch up on a lot of outstanding issues with my plugins at that time. – Redshirt over 1 year ago

tank you redshirt ,for update 0.5

I have problom whit n64 emulator i use Project64 1.7 project 64 1.6 work but no the 1.7

Did you have soluce

the rom no load correctly , i need to start mannual in configuration i use the shitches {rom}. Tank you and sorry for bad english.

  • PJ64 has changed the command-line arguments for 1.7. Unfortunately I don’t have a copy of 1.7 so I don’t know what the new command line format is. Try using “{rom}” – Redshirt over 1 year ago
  • here the version 1.7 :) enjoy i try whit command-line arguments “{rom}” but no work , fail auto load . tank you very mutch if you have issu. – djmisterjon over 1 year ago
  • Project64_1.7.0.49.zipdjmisterjon over 1 year ago
  • I’ve tested that zip with “{rom}” and it works. The zip above may have had some settings enabled by default that aren’t enabled on your install. I’d start by looking there. – Redshirt over 1 year ago
  • Also apparently 1.7 is very picky about rom quality. Hacked/Altered roms may not work. – Redshirt over 1 year ago

I’m having a hard time just getting the plugin installed. I am running Media Browser 2.5.3.0. When I go to plugins I see Gamebroswer 1.0.0.6, I click Install. The progress bar completes, I get no popus or errors. I go to my installed plugins and it is not there. Nothing to configure. I close the configurator, and reopen, still not there. I go back to plugin and Gamebrower looks as if it was not installed. I have rebooted, repaired my Media Browser install, but still cannot get it installed.

Any other way to get this installed? Maybe this is a media browser issue??

Any help is appreciated

  • I dont think gamebrowser is compatible with that version of mediabrowser (only 2.3.2.0). The next release of GB (gamebrowser II) will be compatible with Atlas, the next MB release, so if you can stand it, hold tight, a new release is coming soon! :) – DemonSeed 12 months ago
  • This version of GB still works with 2.5.3.0. Can you post a link to a Core and Configurator logfile after attempting a GB install. How do I enable logging? Where can I find logfiles?Redshirt 12 months ago
  • Also, is the gamebrowser.dll present in your C:\ProgramData\MediaBrowser\Plugins directory? – Redshirt 12 months ago
