Feature Read "mediatype" from mymovies.xml

9 supporters

I would like to request the option to decide what type media is displayed in the info screen of a movie using the mymovies.xml. For example… HD DVD

I have ripped my HD collection to MKV and would like Media Browser to display that it’s either a Bluray, or HDDVD.

I set MetaBrowser to display these, but Media Browser fails to recognize it.

My DVD collection pulls this from the mediainfo.dll nicely. I would like for it to do the same with my HD collection also.

No, I don’t think this is a bug.

Once you take a BD disc and rip it to MKV it is actually no longer a BD disc. The process of creating the MKV stripped out all of the “BD” part. Now its just a hi-rez video/audio stream in a different kind of container.

So, displaying it as a BD disc wouldn’t be very accurate. However, if you really want this, It could be accomplished (I think) by making the xml take priority over mediainfo.

I'd like this as well.

+1 MKV sounds too techy for a media center.

I would definitely like this to be written into both mediabrowser and extract from metabrowser’s mymovies.xml along with audio formats.

ebr,

How would I accomplish this?? Please explain.

Yes, I meant it would have to be a feature request (we'd need to implement this in MB) and a bunch of people would have to vote for it because I can imagine as soon as we do it, people will start saying “hey, why did my media type just change…”

I understand ebr, I just read that I can compile my own build of MediaBrowser and add my own icons?? Is this true??

I just ripped a couple BD’s and converted them to ISO… Still no Bluray icon?!?!

Am I doing something wrong here??

I don’t use ISOs but I don’t think there is any way for us to know what type of ISO it is. But, I should think that if you have it set as a BD in the xml, that it should show.

I rip all by BD’s to mkv as well. In metabrowser I always set the type to bluray too, so it would be nice to get the icons.

Well ebr, you would think. But it seems a though if its not the right folder structure, no icon will show. Thats why I'm so happy to have come across Cheesegeezer’s idea of tricking Media Browser to show them using MetaBrowser’s studio tab. I never did like the quality of the studio icons, I think my icons look very nice in their stead.

I checked and at this time MB does not even read the mediatype tag from the xml. So that will need to be a feature request. Or, I suppose we could just change this one to that.

True, could this easily be added?? I love the icons Media Browser has, don’t get me wrong (Sam, Soultaker) I just wish it were more customizable for the tinkers out there.

And just so everyone knows, if you rip a bluray keeping the original folder structure, a BD icon will show in Media Browser. I tested this over the weekend. So I know the icons work, just not the way I would have hoped.

Yes, if you rip a BD to folder structure it is STILL a BD and MB can discover that. If you go to an ISO, it is also still a BD, but there is just no way for us to know that.

Now, I understand y'all’s desire on this (I was the one who original requested fatal put the media type in metabrowser) but if you rip video and audio streams out of a BD to MKV or whatever else – it is NO LONGER a BluRay Disc. So, it will be somewhat inaccurate to display that icon…

That issue notwithstanding, the real problem I would have with adding this feature is that it is going to invalidate the cache again.

I don’t think that anyone is asking that all MKV’s be treated as blu-ray, just that we have the option to change our own XML files to have it appear as such. I rip to MKV because it’s currently the only way to have keep the HD audio as is.

While the work around geezer and xzener have come up with is nice, it would great to have it done natively. Thanks for entertaining us on the idea, ebr.

I guess adding an option in MetaBrowser is our only option. I have also requested this in the MetaBrowser forum.

The metabrowser side is already there but MB is not using it.

Well it as he Video an aspec ratio. All we need is audio, and get the Media Browser DEV’s on board. hint, hint!!

I'm kinda up in the air about this, I really dont want to go through my entire metabrowser collection and update all my info. Xzener anyone come up with a batch file to do this so I can implement your new media info icons?

With the mediainfo plugin would there be a a way to have a menu come up with configure, on this menu uncheck the details you dont want to show up such as resolution, audio bitrate etc. Also if this is possible would it then be possible for it to have a list of media types, and a place for us to select what icon we would like to show for this media type? Just some thoughts not sure any of them are possible.

I cant believe this topic has only one supporter (that being me).

If we wanted this to be more acurate we could try to add an original source tag in the XML to read. Such as <OriginalSource>HD DVD</OriginalSource>

If Media type is a container and there is an original source entry in the XML MediaBrowser could display the Icon for Original Source. If there is no Original Source entry in the XML Media Browser displays the container icon.

Perhaps a bit long winded, but it would mean eveyone could be happy about their metadata being accurate.

Yeah, but then which icon would show? And how would you know if you're looking at the original source or the current format? Sounds like more complications we don’t need.

For .iso rips, I see this request as valid. For everything else, I really don’t.

A BluRay Disc is more than 1080p video. It is an entire specification for a whole disc, menu operation, etc. When you rip the video stream out of a BluRay disc into just its raw form – no matter what the container – it is no longer a BluRay disc and never will be again.

A user seeing the BluRay icon on a movie should expect all the features that come with a BluRay when that movie is played not just 1080p video.

That’s my viewpoint anyway. Not sure how Sam and SoulTaker feel about this. Ultimately, it would be their call.

ebr – wouldnt setting the type in the xml leave the decision up to the user? if they dont want to display the bluray or hddvd icons, they can leave the type blank. doing this would enable those of us who want it to be able to make the choice to show the icons and those who dont can continue to not show them.

Well, it has two supporters at the moment. A couple more and maybe we can consider it…

Well I have recently started backing up my bluray collection. I trim out all the unwanted stuff and keep the video and audio of my choice. I create iso’s now. No longer creating mkv’s. Hdd’s are very cheap now.I know its a bluray rip and that’s how I would like MediaBrowser to categorize it.

I only rip the movie out of my DVD’s and I get a DVD icon – what’s the difference?

4 supporters, now the most among the unapproved requests.

I see your point, but, in fact the only way you get the DVD icon is if you leave the rip in DVD format (video_ts). If you rip to an MKV you're not gonna get a DVD icon either.

If you did the same thing with your BDs (extracted just the stuff you wanted but left the result in BDMV format) with something like clown_bd, you would get the BluRay icon too.

Still, there is some support for this. If Sam approves it, I'll look into it.
